i am considering smart gauge option on 225. are there any draw backs to motor running at low rpms for extended periods. will this remove need for a kicker. also can this option be added at a later date, if so at what cost.
thanks

Pete-

The Smart-Craft gauges are a really neat feature. I've heard a couple of tails where trolling at the lowest possible rpm's (450) can put a drain on the battery due to low alternator output. Can't verify or provide any first-hand experience in that regard though. I can tell you however, that during an on the water delivery of a Lund 2150 Baron equipped with a 225/digital Opti, the boat lost steerage just below idle speed (550 rpm). Putted out of the harbor at 1.2 mph @ 650 rpm's during this demonstration. Although the cost of the gauge package is the same whether you buy it now, or add it later, keep in mind if you buy it later, you're going to have to pay somebody to install it. Also, since the two S/C gauges monitor EVERY boat (i.e. fuel, oil, water psi, trim etc.)& engine function, you'll probably end up with some extra holes in your dash afterwards (depending on how many analog gauges your rig has). One last point to consider, buying the set up now (rather than later), most of the labor intensive install work was done at the factory - correctly. Hope this helps

Smartgauges are really neat. I had the opportunity to run a boat with the set up and what Jeger says is true except the set up cannot be added later unless you trade in the 225 OPTI for a 225 DIGITAL Optimax!!!It is a different motor. Smartgauges are about $1100.00 more because you have to buy the gauge upgrade and the motor upgrade. Worth it though !!!!!!!!!Tom
