I am buying a 150 hp outboard this year. I am considering buying a motor like the Johnson 150 or the Mercury 150 XR6. These are cheaper and time proven motors. Are the newer efi and dfi's really worth it? Any input would be appreciated.

Depends on the conditions you use the motor in. The area where EFI outshines carbs is in
1) Cold weather starting. EFI's start right up without choking and the repeated startings of carb engines when they are cold.
2) Adjusting to different elevations. If you run you rig at a constant elevation, this is not a concern. EFI (and DFI) adjust fuel mixture by computer automatically, while carb engines would need rejetting.

DFI's have all the advantages of EFI as well as they are more economical with gas and oil. (approx 30-40% are the claims)

Enjoy making the choice!

Have spent much time the last couple of weeks wondering the same thing regarding motors. I personally cannot justify the additional $2000 for the fuel injected motors. Will purchase a Starcraft 176 DC Superfisherman with a 125 carb Merc and use the $2000 to add a 9.9 four stroke for trolling.

I think that the way of the future is going to be the injection systems. I don't know if they have all the bugs worked out yet. One thing I really hate is gettng stuck out in bad weather with a motor that desides some sensor don't like what it see's.
I just bought a 2000 115 Johnson, mainly because everything I have read and heard about this motor has been good. I think that when they get all this new high tech stuff working you won't be able to beat them. But I'll run my carbed engine for a while yet.

You can buy a lot of gas and oil for the extra money it takes to buy a Ficht-Opti or a Four Stroke. Even at todays prices. And the thing is, they not fish as well as the old two strokes. Engine manufactures spent years developing good fishing motors. Then big brother steps in, so they spend month's getting ready for a 2006 regulation.????? Catch A Big One! tom

Bussman,

Is the $2000 figure the cost of going from a carburated 125 to a EFI 125? That sounds steep. the actual difference when I bought my 150 EFI was $400 between the carb and injected versions.
At 2 grand, a new trolling motor does sound nice...
