I hope to install a bowmount on my 180 Princecraft. The maximum Pinpoint goes @ 24 volt is 60 lbs. thrust. Is this enough power or should I go to the 80 lbs. 36 volt motor ?
How do you power 36 volt...2 or 3 batteries ?
Great site
Thanking all in advance...
Depends,
Your boat is a large boat, with a fair amount of sidewall.
It really depends on how you will be using your trolling motor.
If you use the motor only when the wind is less than about 10 mph, you will be just fine.
If you use the motor for winds greater than about 10 mph, you are going to be on the edge for power.
Do you have a kicker on your boat, to be used when the wind kicks up? If so, the 60 lb thrust will be great.. In all actuallity, if the wind really kicks up, it is difficult to use a bow mounted motor, simply because of the wave action and the bouncing of the bow. For waves up to 2 - 2 1/2 feet -- the electric will be fine.
If you plan on using the electric motor for trolling for a long time, you will be better on going with the 80 lb thrust - 36 volt motor, simply because you will have longer endurance at any setting because of the additional electric power.
As far as batteries go, most folks normally use 3-12 volt batteries. If room permits, you can always go with an industrial - single 36 volt battery. However, it is normally a bit difficult to get a large industrial battery installed in a boat, such as yours.
The pinpoint is a wonderful motor -- and in your case, I would gusess would be adequate about 80-90 % of the time.
Take care
