I am in the process of shopping for a new boat. So far im leaning towards the Alumacraft trophy 185. The thing is this, Im trying to decide about the motor. Two stroke vs. four, 115 2stroke, or 90 four. With the bigger two's such as the new Merc. optimax i am figuring I would need a kicker for trolling. With the fourstroke having the low idle speed I was wondering if I could troll with that? I have a honda 25 four stroke I bought last year for my john boat and I was wondering about the poss. of using that for a kicker, but then I wondered about the weight since the fours are so heavy. I will not have the money to spend on a kicker after I get all the downriggers and other accesories that I need. The other thing I was wondering was about the new 2006 standard motors as far as noise and exhaust. The guy at the showroom said there was hardly any exhaust and they were quiet like the fours, but he was kind of shifty and I figured he might have been blowin smoke up my A&*.Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Go with the Smart Craft system and the Opti-Max, and you will not need the kicker; I am running the 200 this year without a kicker on a 20 foot boat, and am confident the system will perform!

You might want to go with a bigger motor for that boat. But go with a Opti-max the fuel is very good in the long run.If you go with a kicker motor install a tilt&trim on the boat.It will stop your motor from bouncing alot. And its great getting it up and down.Have fun fishing.
I just ordered a new 1775 Pro V. I struggled with the same question. I went with the 115 Optimax and 9.9 4 stroke kicker. The Optimax actually weighs more than the 90 four stroke... I think the 90 4 stroke weighs 386 and the Optimax weighs 442. The dealer assured me this wouldn't be a problem. I'll tell you for sure how I like in about 3 more weeks. :)
If the bucks are a problem, toss a bucket over board to slow you up, and get a kicker year. Whichever you choose, you'll have a nice rig.
What motor did he say "was hardly any exhaust and quiet like the fours"? Let me know Tom
