I was looking at boats today and the salesman was trying to get me to buy a big foot motor in the 60hp range. What is the difference between a normal merc. and a big foot merc. Thanks a ton!

The bigfoots are the same motor, just that they have a bigger prop at a lower gear ratio. It is set up kind of like the Yamaha. a 2.33 ratio vs. the standard 1.64 used in the 60 merc. it really only comes down to what kind of boat you are putting it on. I am curious of your setup, cause the bigfoots are only available in remotes. If that is the case, why not go with a bigger motor to begin with. The bigfoots have the same gear case as the 75 and 90 mercs. I would plain and simply buy the biggest motor you can afford, trying to max out the HP rating. You will be much more happy, I know from experience.
Good luck

Hi all:
I beleive that the Merc, bigfoot and the Yamaha T50 are intended to move large loads ie: pontoon boats..hence the lower gear ratio and larger prop.I can see where they would be great out of the hole
