Try Lake shelbyville and the Illinois river for sauger and occassional walleye.

Illinois has several good spots for walleyes, sauger and saugeyes.
I just finished writing a fishing column for my newspaper about a 9.2 pound saugeye from 900-acre Lake Evergreen near Bloomington. If confirmed as a saugeye by DNA, it's a new state record. Nearby 600-acre Lake Bloomington has walleyes.
Lake Shelbyville, 11,000-acres, is making a strong comeback in walleyes after DNR discovered they were stocking fry too early before plankton had a chance to grow. A few rearing ponds and delaying stocking until fish are bigger fixed that. Now rated good with fish averaging 2 pounds with larger ones mixed in.
Clinton Lake, 5,500-acres, has fair to good walleyes. Monsters at night in warm months can be taken trolling the submerged dam.
Chain O Lakes is home waters to one of the best walleye pros in the country, Mike Gofron.
Lake Carlyle is stocked with sauger. Kinkaid has walleyes.
Several smaller impoundments have walleyes, too.
The Illinois River has great sauger. The Ohio River has sauger, too. The Mississippi River has walleyes, of course.
Best to get a copy of the booklet, "Fishing Illinois 2001." Available at bait shops or check the Illinois DNR web site. Destinations are outlined in that. Feel free to phone me at 800-747-7323 x227 or e-mail srichard@davesworld.net Welcome to the Land of Lincoln.
