Is anybody finding any morrels yet? I live in south central Iowa and with this late spring things seem to be a little bit behind schedule. Any luck in your part of the country?

Mushrooms for bait? I think that would've only worked in the 60's.

The big thing now is Ecstasy, but that is hard to attach to a hook.

Try the Texas ones. Then you can use your mind to catch those itsy bitsy fishies.

JH, Got some friends who just got back from Kentucky Lake. Brought back crappies and mushrooms. Probably another week and a half to two weeks yet. Grays will probably start to pop this weekend if we get the thunder and rain they're calling for.

No mushrooms here yet in the Ohio Valley. About another week and a half. Soon as turkey season starts, it looks like around here. Sure are making me hungry though talkin about em. A big platter of fried bass with cornflake or Ritz cracker crumbs. And another platter full of golden crisp morrels, lightly salted. And a big bottle of Coca Cola. MmmmmmmmMmmmmm! Thats what I live for every spring . Russell ;-):-) P.S. Did any of you get any sheephead mushroom last fall? My favorite!

And the flyin pink fire engines and green fire spitting toad monsters are everywhere....

Make sure you know absolutely what mushrooms your picking, unless your local hospital has extra livers ready for transplant.

Last time I had shrooms I woke up in a bathtub full of ice man. So somebody has extra livers out there. If whoever stold my liver is reading this give it back it's a ##### drinking beer without it. Oh yea, haven't found any Morels yet either, need to be patient, they'll come.

Cbellin:

Different types of morals like different things. For example Black morals (the first to come) can be found around Wild Cherry, Ash, and Maple, to name a few. Early on I would concentrate on the south side of the woods and on moist south facing hillsides. Moisture and heat are the key to these little morsels. I live in northern Indiana where our black are just starting to come, I picked about a pound tonight that I had found about a week ago, but left them go because they were only about the size of a thimble. I went back tonight thinking that a 2 inch snow and freezing temps that we got the other morning may of done them in, to my surprise most of them were about 1.5 to 2 inches tall. They’ll go great with a stake tomorrow night. One more thing, Often times when you find a fresh black it will appear to be a yellow or a Gray (sometimes many people think there finding yellows or grays when their actually finding fresh blacks).

As for the Greys and Yellows, they will come two to three weeks after the start of the blacks. Your best bet is hunting around dead Elm, “old” Apple orchards and some times in pine trees. When you’re hunting dead Elms, the best ones are the ones that have just died and before the bark starts to fall off, The bark will appear to be splitting and have a white spotted look, the under side of the splitting bark will have a red color to it. This seems to be when they are at their prime.

Hopes this helps,
Randy

They also grow quite well under a sycamore tree.

Every year we find our morels along shaded river bottoms during the fourth season turkey hunt. This is usually around the first few weeks in May. Last year, we called the hunt off for the day. We stumbled across a flush that took most of the day to pick. In a nutshell, I've personally found that in Iowa,(around the Wyoming area) the first two weeks in May yield the largest and most morels. Happy trails!
