A freind just bought a fiberglass boat which the finish is very dull. Any suggestions as to the best restoration materials?

Thanks,
Boomer

3M markets a combination restoration wax that includes a mild abrasive. It's designed for sun bleached and oxidized gelcoat. Unless the gelcoat is completely gone, it works pretty well. Just be carefull with a power buffer, don't use one if you can avoid it.

The easiest way to do this is to "let somebody else do it."

Most localities have "detailing shops". Normally these shops are very reasonable to "detail" a boat. They will do a complete wash and clean on the boat -- buff out the finish -- do a surface restoration as required -- then put on a couple coats of power applied paste wax. Many of these folks will do a typical 17 boat for $100 - $200.

Generally, this is an excellent expendentiure of money. The average person doesn't have the equipment and expertise to get the nice shine that can be had with folks using this equipment and experience.

Take care
