This announcement below has been on the Fishing Hot Spots website since November. I bought a Garmin 162 with the intention of purchasing this CD to go with it.....but March has come and gone and April is more than half over and still no map. Anybody have any REAL idea when this is coming out and what it can do vs. other FHS maps or any of the competition?

Garmin/FHS Announcement 01/11/2001
GARMIN GPS UNITS FEATURE FISHING HOT SPOTS MAPS

(Rhinelander, WI) - Fishing Hot Spots, Inc., the nation’s largest publisher of fishing maps and Garmin Inc., a leading manufacturer of navigation, communication and information electronics, jointly announce a new CD-ROM giving anglers what it takes to find fish – introducing MapSource™ Fishing Hot Spots®.

Fishing Hot Spots® maps have been putting people on fish for more than two decades and now GARMIN users will have much of that fishing research in one convenient CD-ROM. The MapSource Fishing Hot Spots CD contains detailed fishing information such as depth contours, shorelines and navigational aids like boat ramps, marinas and campgrounds. Fishing Hot Spots’ legendary fishing tips and techniques are also available.

“This information, downloaded into a GARMIN GPS unit will give the user a live map,” said Mike Michalak, Fishing Hot Spots president. “Planning is the key to fishing success and combining that map with the GARMIN unit gives anglers all the information they need before they hit the water and now, while they’re on it.” Gary Kelley, GARMIN’s director of marketing, agrees. “By turning on a GARMIN GPS unit, you’ll have instant access to marked fishing areas, tips, techniques, bottom composition and many more valuable insights that will help make for a successful fishing trip. Even more amazing, the GARMIN GPS unit will tell you where you are in relation to this lake data.”

MapSource Fishing Hot Spots CD-ROM will interface with several of GARMIN’s GPS units, including the GPSMAP 162, GPSMAP 168 Sounder, eMap, eTrex Legend and eTrex Vista. The software is compatible with Windows 95, 98 and NT operating systems.

The new MapSource Fishing Hot Spots CD will be available in March 2001 at a suggested retail price of $116.65. The price includes access to one geographic region of your choice.

BamBam...

The announcement was just that...information about the relationship between FHS and Garmin. The new Garmin MapSource Fishing Hot Spots CD-ROM is available at retailers and from the Garmin site (I believe).

This is a Garmin product, utilizing our data and has been out since late March. This is the first release of the program with additional lakes being worked on as this is typed. Garmin tells us they're looking to have more maps completed for the units later this summer.

You can check the cartography page on the Garmin Website for updates. It's a great product...good luck on the water!

Mike,

I have the Minnesota lakes (Mille Lacs, Leech, Vermilion, etc.) CD, bought last year early summer.

The printing function is lousy -- maps come out corrupt on 2 different computers and 3 different printers, all of which print perfectly everything else I've ever needed.

This is not the CD to which the above posts are referring to, these are for uploading int your GPS unit. I think you are referring to the FHS CD-rom for your PC. However, I have had the same problem with my WI CD. Only on certain maps or certain locations on the same map; some parts will print flawlessly while other portions come out blank or only partial picture.

The printing problems referred to are a function of Windows and the setup of your computers. The Digital Map Series has no print utility at all and uses whatever you have set up in your system.

A properly downloaded and installed update from the FHS site (www.fishinghotspots.com) many time cures the problem. If not, a freshly downloaded printer driver from the manufacturer does. It is an intermittent Windows problem and in 100% of the cases reported to us, one or both of the above fixed things.

We do have a full upgrade coming down the pipe in a couple weeks and if the software has been registered, owners will be notified by email or simply sent the necessary files to install. We've included some nice enhancements too.

Eager for Maps for the 162

Mike,

Can you tell me if Garmin is working on maps for Winnebago, Butte des Mortes, Winneconne, and Poygan? I know these maps are available through lowrance. These are such popular fishing lakes in Wisconsin, I'm surprised the didn't work on these lakes first.

Mike,

I'll look forward to that update. I have tried EVERYTHING you mention, and simply can't get reliable printing, but the computers/printers in question have NEVER ever failed to print anything else, and I use them a lot.

Hans,

If you downloaded and installed the update AND downloaded a new printer driver, then there's something else to look at in your setup. My next question is, do you have a Lexmark printer? They react differently than everyone else's.

At any rate, drop me an email with your system specs, especially the printer and we'll see if it matches anything in our support database. If not, the upgrade may do the trick for you.

Again, there's not a print utility at all in our software so trying to find the problem is like looking for suspended walleye in a rainstorm.
