View Full Version : Question for any Yamaha Techs or Mechanics

Well, I pulled my boat out of storage to give it its first start of the season. I normally pop the oil injection arm off so that the engine gets double oil for its first start up however I had trouble removing it so I just pumped the arm a couple of times and went up front to start the engine. The arm must have gotten stuck on a hose or something because when I started the engine it must have been at or close to full throttle. The engine revved up extremely high without any warm up. Just kicked over and started right up at Max RPM. It took me a little bit to realize what happened. I looked at the throttle and could not figure out what had happened. I finally, after what seemed like 5 seconds, shut it down. Found that the throttle back by the engine had got caught, released it, and started it up again. Seemed to idle fine in the drive way.

My question what damage if any could have occurred through this? I would hate to drive 2 hours somewhere, or longer, and find I tore something up. What should I check and would this have scored the cylinder walls? If so what would be the symptoms? Man what a downer. Should I cancel my Canadian trip.

Is your motor already broken in? Did you fog it before storage? The problems from this would mostly stem from lack of lubrication (after sitting for a long time, at least some of the oil would have dripped off of part of the cylinders). Since the crank and lower rod bearings are probably roller bearings they probably did not suffer any damage, as long as there was at least a little lubrication. As long as you did not hear any major noises, at worst you accelerated the wear on the pistons, piston rings, water pump impeller, and to a lesser degree the crank and rod bearings. If the motor started right up, Yamaha has oil injection, I dont think that the motor ran for many revolutions before normal 2 stroke lubrication was restored.
I wouldnt worry about it. :-)
Happy Boating!

Take it to the closet lake and let it run for awhile. If any damage has occured you'll find out pretty quickly.

It is already broken in. It is a 1996 Yamaha ProV 150. Impeller was changed beginning of last summer. Started right up after I shut it down. Seem to ran fine in the driveway, however, that is in the driveway. A little rough at Idle. Never seen so much smoke so fast. Thanks for any other info you can provide.

Hi KM.
I'll bet that scared the crap outta ya. If there was a lot of snoke that tells me that you must have had the engine fogged or oil in the cylinders. That motor has a rev limiter set at about 6200 rpm and since the engine was cold and shut down right away (5 sec) there shouldn't be any damage to the rings or cylinder walls. Hey, it's a Yamaha. Go catch some fish.

Thanks for the response. How does this rev limiter work? It will still respond even when the rod connected to the oil injection is open bypassing the advanced timing mechanism? Any other info is greatly appreciated.

KM, You are becomming what we call in the biz a Boat Hypochrondriac! I'm sure that your motor is just fine. Here is my advice to you---Leave the cover on instead of doing that witchcraft stuff under it and go fishing and enjoy yourself. That it the intended purpose of the boat isn't it ?? Happy fishing Tom

So that is what they say in the "Biz" is it. Well I have to agree with you in part. I am very particular about my equipment. I do not make 6 figure and cannot afford to treat my equipment improperly because I cannot afford to replace it. I also have only 2 weeks after school lets out to make sure everything is OK for my Canadian trip that I can only take once a year. The worst thing for a fisherman to have happen is be on a well deserved vacation, or in a tournament for that matter. and have his equipment fail. That is a real bummer. Call it what you may, bottom line is I wanted as much information as I could possibly get from as knowledgeable of people that I could find. I have given much information to this board for people who asked and just wanted some in return.

Sorry if I have dirtied up the board for you!

Hey KM I agree with you!!!!!!!!!! THese guys that run and gun are the ones that are always screaming about "my EviJohMerYamHon" just blew up.

You can tinker and check all you want, I think it gives you a nice warm fuzzy feeling that "at least" you didn't find something that don't look right, when your 40 miles out, a nasty storm is heading your way and you need everything the old EviJohMerYamHon can give you...

Good luck fishing Let us know how Canada was. I'm heading up the last week of July and the first week in Aug.

Hey Flip, How fuzzy and warm do you think KM felt when he ran his tach on that Yammi through the ceiling? KM, Dirty the board up all you want it's good entertainment for me to see what kind of witchcraft consumers do on their motors instead of believing their dealer or doing as the owners manual says. Remember all the free information on the computer including mine is no match for what the owners manual or your dealer might have. Have all the fun you want but there is no substitute for running the boat on the water before the big trip. Surely the flushett in the driveway is not the way to do it. Have a good trip Tom

Tom,

My old dealer had a mechanic who now works directly for Yamaha as a specialty tech. He fixes problems that others cannot fix. He is the one who used to take the oil injection arm off to allow double oil when starting the engine after a long lay-off. He did it for me all the time. I had trouble getting the arm off so rather then tinkering around with it I just pumped it a few times, (actually had my kid do it), and started it up. NO VODOO intended. This was not something I just made up. I am to particular about my equipment to do that.

KM

P.S.- He is also the mechanic that recomended running the Yammie up to 5800 RPM to get max horsepower because this is where the most horsepower is produced for this engine. This is different then the owners manual also. Something I am sure Yammaha won't put in print for the general consumer.
