I just recently changed rigs,this rig is a 22'Thompson with a 4.3 mercruiser,alpha-I drive.I got no literature with it and didn't want to pry info out of a dealer...can anyone tell me who makes that 4.3,ford,GM,other?Also this is the carerra model,what is the fuel capacity,cruising range,red line on the tachometer,crankcase capacity,etc...It is a 1990 year model in pretty good shape any help to keep it that way would be appreciated

4.3 Mercruiser is made by GM. If its fuel injected it pumps out 205 HP, if carberated 175 hp. Red line is 4600 - 4800 rpm, (according to my owners manual). As far as fuel capacity, that's boat specific and I don't know about yours. I can troll for 10 hours, after cruising 10 miles out and back and go thru less than 14 gal. I've got my idle down to about 650 rpm with no problems what so ever.

It's not totally bulletproof. I recall an article in either Trailerboats or Bass & Walleye Boats magazine that warned of problems with the distributer shaft. It seems that many boat builders don't buy the complete engine from GM. To save a few dollars, they buy the distributer and shaft assembly from an aftermarket source. The problem is the hardened steel GM drive gear eats the softer brass aftermarket gear. It's worth a check of the distributer materials.
