On Monday, May 15th, the DNR will be holding a meeting to hear our feelings about the cormorants. They are protected, but they can take action to reduce the numbers, but we most be there to put the pressure on. Studies have been done on the cormorants and they are eating our game fish at an alarming rate. Check out The May/June issue of Great Lakes Angler. Be there or call your local DNR office. The meeting in Green Bay is at the Ramada Inn, 2750 Ramada Way, Green Bay. For meeting times and locations in your area, call or local DNR office

I hope they finally do something to reduce them. Be sure and attend if there is a meeting in your area, because they usually poll the audience and give good weight to the feeling of the public.

Cormorants are more like the Norweigen rat and the brown cockroach than passenger pigeon.

Get Real

Get real you stupid MORON! It's tree huggers like you that make us sick!
The comorant population is at problem levels! Not only do they eat an incredible amount of fish, but their droppings are destroying vegitation on nesting Islands andf driving away other species of birds that are much more important to the ecosystyem than they are.
There are virtually no predators for these birds and any animal, left unchecked will soon overrun their nice in the environment.
When will you tree huggers get your hweads out of your a**es and finally see the forest for the trees?

isnt there a problem with these birds on west sister island?

Don

There is a problem with these birds on West Sister, Middle and other Islands in the west end of Lake Erie. Naturally our DNR is "evaluating" everything before taking action. That is, they are waiting until the island is totally destroyed before they get off their duffs. My main concern is what they did to the population of game fish in Lake Ontario (the Cormorants). If you can find some back issues of Bassmaster and BASSNTIMES you will find that contrary to what the "authorities" originally told us, they consume a lot of game fish, particularly young smallmouth bass.

Cormorants actually help population of small fry.

When larger fish group together to eat small fry,

cormorants group together and eat the larger fish and the fry live.

I have seen this when bluegill where eating bass fry and the birds came in on the bluegills, letting the bass fry live.

Commorants due have some good.

they also love to eat gobies (easy pickens for them )

That's a great rational if you want a lake full of only minnows.

walleye, perch, bass, pike, FRY
GROW UP TO BE BIG FISH.

I am not saying comorants are the best things since sliced bread, i am just saying they do have some good.

agreed

agreed, the comorants do some good. I dont think anyone here is aspousing total eradication of these birds, just better (or at least some) control.

I agree with you, a controlled hunt during the waterfowl season would be a good start.....

In Ohio you are aloud to shoot 5 merganzers a day.
The Birds are useless to eat, they just want to keep them in check.

They should do the same with cormorants.

p.s. I was just trying to point out in above posts
that the lowly cormorant have some good uses.

Does anybody know if they are any good table fair ???

Never tried
05-15-2000, 11:46 AM
Never tried one, but then I have never eaten a rat either!!LOL.
I am also sure they make great fertilizer.
Voice your opinions at the meeting and lets hope the DNR (do nothing right) will actually use facts this time, rather than emotion.
Remember, there are a lot of really pissed off anti's over the dove issue. They may try and screw this up too.
