I have been reading the post on this board for a long time . I have heard people gripe about this motor and that motor . Well I guess its My turn !
I have a 150 Yamaha thatI purchased new in May of 98. I came with a two year Factory warranty which is about to expire . In the two years I have used this motor in has had 5 computers installed on it . All for the same problem , the motor at about 2/3 throttle runs eratic fast slow fast slow etc. It is at the dealers now again with the same problem . There are no codes this time that indicate a bad computer so Yamaha instructed them to go through the carberaters. I have called Yamaha customer relations and they don't do any fallow -up or even call me back . Its like ( you purchased it, your stuck with-it , and your warranty is about to expire so lets make do until you have to pay for it. My confedence in this unit is none and I think I have a lemon. What do you Guys Think I should Do???? But like I said , I have heard this about other brands on this site

This is VERY unusuall for that engine but yes, it is a concern. Does it do this all season or just in the spring when the water is cold?
Here is what I would do, (for what it's worth). First of all BE NICE. Express your concerns to your dealer and tell him that you would like to meet with him and the Yamaha service rep. Make sure that you STRESS that it is not to critisize what he has done for you, it is just to discuss what could be causing this problem and the fact that it has not been solved in your warranty period. The rep. should make note of this and possibly extend your warranty for just that problem. As long as you are civil with the dealer he should be able to do this, (keep in mind he doesn't have to and that's why I keep saying to be nice) If any dealer has the attitude of buy it and get lost......well, I'd find a new dealer pretty quick. You have a fine engine the unfortunatly has a problem the no one has solved yet. What range do the rev's vary? Is the motor OX66 or carbed?

I called their customer service last year for some help on my Yammy. I ended up calling three times and never did get an answer or a follow up call. That , coupled with the fact that getting parts in good time is like finding a needle in a haystack, that I won't buy another. It's a reliable motor, but in my experience not really any more than other Merc/OMC's I had. Certainly not worth playing russian roulette for with spare parts. I say sianara to mine.

While it is true that there are such things as lemons in a line up, on the whole, I think your statement that Yammies are like all others does not hold any water(pun intended). I cannot speak to the Merc lineup, however, I can tell you this. The dealer I work for sells, Honda, Yamaha, Johnson, and Evinrude. By far, the motors we see the least of in the shop are Honda's. Second in line is Yammie, and OMC comes in a dismal third. A bad experience with one certain manufacturer can leave a bad taste, and skew a persons veiw on the entire line. Get the facts before you stick your foot in your mouth.

I suggest you purchase an Evinrude Ficht, or a Merc. Opti-max. You will have trouble, but at least you won't be a rarity. You will have many, many peers to commiserate with.
