Can anyone provide me with any insight on the pros
and cons of buying a rebuilt outboard motor.
Are they as reliable as new outboards? Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
Motor I am looking at has a new powerhead.

I had a powerhead rebuild on my 1989 100 hp Evinrude. Twice. After 7 years of heavy use. The motor had a noticeable loss of power, and would not hold an idle. Carbon buildup was the culprit.

The first rebuild I got ripped off, the motor did not run much better after spending $1,200. When I called the dealership, they were out of business. So I brought my boat in to the dealership where I originally purchased it, and they said I was missing 2 rings and a piston needed replacing. And that this was the third boat that had been in their shop after being worked on by the dealership that I got screwed by.

After a second rebuild, (another $1,400) the motor runs as good as new. 3 years now without a problem, still running like new, again. I now use only quality oil and use OMC carbon guard in every other tankful. I also throw in a little Sea Foam now and then.

To answer your question, if the dealership and mechanics are reputable, a rebuilt motor is as good as a new one. You should be able to save some good dough.

That's my experience with rebuilt motors.
