Do the hand held VHF radios perfom somewhat as well as the larger ones you mount permanently?
I use each type on Mille Lacs and if had to pick one I would go with the mounted unit. Your limited to 5 watts of power with the hand unit and have the option of 25 watts with the mounted radio. I hardly ever use the 25 watt button since most of my talking is to people within a few miles. From time to time longer distance or weather conditions requires high power and it does make a difference. What's nice about the hand held units is the portability. I use a hand unit more to stay in touch with the cabin when out and about visiting or out on the ice fishing. The hand units also require battery charging whereas the mounted types don't.
