View Full Version : Guest 2631 Battery Charger
The directions for the hookup are simple enough to follow but need some advice. It looks like two sets of the wires are going to be about 2 feet short to the trolling batteries. Do I cut the ends off and splice additional wire (what type) and attach new connectors to the ends of the spliced wire?? The other set of wires go to the starting battery and I will need to attach about 15 feet of wire. Another question - do I leave the fuses where there are now or do I have to splice them in nearer the batteries being charged??? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

Mal,
For the trolling batteries, cut off the ring terminals add 12 gauge wire and add new ring terminals. For the start battery, cut the wire above the fuse holder, splice in 12 gauge wire and re-attach the fuse holder near the battery. Use a marine grade wire and solder and shrink sleeves on the connections.
Have a great day!

Sue...
You say to use 12 ga, yet the Guest extension kit is 14 ga. What gives?

Confussed,
You can use either 12 or 14 gauge to extenend the wires. I have had more people asking if 12 gauge can be used to reduce voltage drop, which is why I went with the 12 gauge.

anytime you add any length of wire, you add the chance of added resistance. your safer to use the next size larger (smaller in number) wire. not that a couple feet would change anything, but 15ft could make a difference.
IMHO, i wouldn't solder the wires, i'd crimp them and then heatshrink or use liquid electrical tape. soldering makes a great connection, but it's not reccommended over time due to soldering (heat from)makes the wire next to the solder brittle and with vibration will break right there at the joint of hard solder and soft wire.
my 3bank guest charger has proven to be THE best charger i have owned. i had 5 other chargers, (3 other brands) the guest has proven it's value and preformance the others just don't obtain! i've given away 3 of the other chargers, not worth the risk to have bad battery's when it's fishin time......been there.
