View Full Version : Planer Board Mast?
Hello, I am looking to get a Planer Board Mast. Looked in the archives for this subject with no luck. Which brand of masts are you guys using, and what are the pros and cons of them? What releases are you using? Thanks for your help... Bob

Bob I have the telescopic Big Jon mast and it's works just like it's suppose to but to be honest I have gotten to where running Big Boards are a pain in the Butt. I run the In-line boards (OffShore) as often as I can. With a little practice they are very easy and a Whole lot less hassle.

bob,in addition to using off-shore planer boards; i use the big jon planer board mast for certain types of fishing. bigjon.com
as you know, if you are willing to take the extra time for set up and use of the planer board mast; the actual time reeling in fish is alot more fun without a board hanging on the line. an example would be early season great lakes fishing.
keep in mind that it takes a capable partner to have a good day on the water when using a planer mast and larger board system. i always look forward to using this system and the big jon products out of Traverse City Michigan are the best.
as far as the clips to use, the "visi grip" by Laurvick is tops. The Laurvick company can be reached by calling 715-394-7671.
ps: keep plenty of clips on hand. when the fish are really hitting; you may have 10 - 20 clips slid down to the boards!
have a good day on the water!

Bob,
Do yourself a favor and check out the Riviera/Offshore Masts. The one to have is the one with the spring loaded "kachman" automatic retrieval reels. They are a breeze to use. When you are done fishing you just drive over to them and pick them up. No cranking by hand. Less expensive than the Electric Big Jons, and nothing to wire. I was all set to buy the electric Big Jon's and Denny at Sportsman's Outpost in Vermillion recommended the Riviera mast. Give him a call at 888 855-9032.

mnjimcarp,
I was going to post but YOU SAID IT ALL! I use the exact same setup. Including the Laurvick clips! They are my #1 pick as well.
