Lucky- I've done both on multiple occassions. We need more info from you in order to help you out. Do you want a fly-in experience on a remote lake? Are you after numbers of fish or size? Wilderness experience or luxury lodge with jacquzzi? Golf course? What species of fish are you targeting? Cooking your own meals or meals in the lodge? Bar? Trailering your own boat or renting a boat or fishing from a charter boat? Guide or no guide? Do you want to play pinochle with the neighbors at night or prefer no neighbors? Get the picture? Depends on what you are looking for in your trip.

Have fished lake of the woods in the Nestor Falls area for 15 years and have always had a good trip. Trips are in June or Sept so not real sure of July and August. You can drive to your cabin and good roads. Fish are relatively easy to find as we do not get more than 45 minutes from Nestor. Protected area so you can always find a place to fish. We always stay at housekeeping cabins and cost is reasonable ($250-300 ea) and take our own boat.

We have caught more slot size walleyes in the last 5 years than the previous 10 years. Pike, smallmouth, and muskie fishing is decent. Also places you could fly out for a day trip if you like.

If you want a nice fishing vacation that is close to the border without 20 -30 resorts on the lake, jets skis flying by, playing bumper boats, check out www.happy-landing-lodge.com

LOTW is fantastic, have been going there twice a year for about 10 years. We take a houseboat out of Sioux Narrows in July/Aug. Find walleyes on humps topping out at 15-20' in 40-60' of water. We normally go west of Yellow Girl almost to the other side of the lake then fish our way back. Tow our own boats behind, GREAT time, and the people at Floating Lodges and equipment are great, with 4-5 different size boats to choose from.
We then take a crappie trip in the end of Sept. to Nestor Falls and stay at Helliar's another great place with very nice people and good prices. The Housebout would be my choice for a 50th birthday present, put your cabin anywhere you want. Booking one now could be a problem... E-mail me for the # could be some cancelations. Doc

I have to toss in a vote for either the houseboat thing, do this out of Kenora every year, or else Whitefishbaycamp, as that is where I open the season. Either way you can't go wrong. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for like the previous posts said.

Grassy Narrows Resort is in the island area of Lake of the Woods, and has the feel of a wilderness fly-in location. Yet, you can drive to Morson, get picked up by launch, and get there in about 30 minutes by water. They have a website, but I didn't search for it. Shouldn't be hard to find.

Be prepared to gain weight on some really great food.

The area has alot to offer any type of fisherperson - beginer or pro. However, if you wish a good bite, be it the spawn, or Oct. 1st, I suggest you not wait much longer to pick a site and reserve it. I mainly have fished LOTW in Oct. - once with Curt Q. back in 1999 - I doubt he remembers me though! We didn't tear 'em up that weekend, but in previous years, I had the fishing expierence of a lifetime. Hope you enjoy yourself. Rich.
