Hi guys,

Got stranded on highway heading for river. My '89 Mini Van just stalled out. Any suggestions on where to start? Going to try starting fluid in the air cleaner first I guess. Any websites for Chrysler problems? I'd hate to lose my hunt/fish truck.

I had a '90 Voyager and it did that to me on the highway. Just stopped running and wouldn't start or, if it did, it didn't keep going long. Turned out to be the fuel control (?). Some type of sensor that monitors and contols the gas flow. Had the part replaced. Had the same problem on a '90 Horizon (same engine). Seems this was a common problem about that time.

Check the fuel pump or the filter. Be sure the carb is getting fuel if your rig has a carb. If fuel injected, turn the key on to the accessory mode and listen for the fuel pump to kick in.

Are you getting a spark to the plugs? Check the distributor or the wires.

Those would be 2 of the first spots to check. From there it could be as small as a bad computer board to a blown head. Without more info it is hard to tell.

Good luck!

If it just suddenly stalled and stopped, I doubt starting fluid is going to help.

You don't mention smoke or steam or knocking, etc., so look the three basics your engine needs -- fuel, air, and spark.

My guess is either your fuel pump or ignition module has failed.

Thanks guys,

I appreciate all help. Going out to check for Gas, Spark and Air. Will post up my findings.

Thanks again,

Well Guys,

I've got no spark. Stuck a screwdriver in a wire (plug end) - ground it over a bolt and had Jr. crank it - nothing.

Now what? Oh yeah, last year it was stalling out going thru puddles on the highway (got caught in a monsoon) I' let it sit for a few minutes and off we'd go. The garage replaced a "computer module". I had the cap and some other electrical parts replaced too at that time.

Thanks for any help.

There are a gazillion vehicles like yours out there. They have been around a long time. They are all the same. You can't be the first guy with this problem. Any Chryco merchanic should be able to answer this one in his sleep. He's been fixing them for years.

Same thing happend to me, Does it just turn over and not hit at all? Thats what mine did and it was the timing belt!!

I was in a parking lot, when a lady came out - tried to start her mini van and no luck. She told me that it had quit just as she had got to the parking spot.

I made a couple of checks and found that there was in ignition connection of the lower side of the engine that had come apart. I plugged it back together, put the cable back into the cable holder where someone had apparently removed it and she was good to go.

She told me that recently someone had changed her oil who didn't know exactly what they were doing, and had probably caused the problem.

Check it out. I suspect that it is a simple problem.

Take care

REW....I want you for a neighbor!! It would put an end to all of my repair bills. I don't think there's anything you couldn't diag/fix !!

Well - still no spark. Not timing belt (rotor spins when cranking). Not cap, rotor brand new. Ignition control module replaced last year (June 2000). Wonder if it has gone bad again or is getting blown for some other reason.

It might be time to ditch the beater. Hate to just because I can throw the dog, decoys, waders in with no cares as well as drive 630 miles on $40 gas. And I have lots of room in there. Any other diagnostics I can try????

How about a coil? I've got a LeBaron (2.5L, 4 cyl), and I had the timing belt go out on me a while back...stopped cold. I see that you said that is OK though. Rotor's have been a problem. I also had a MAP sensor go bad too. Would only run at high RPM's, with the foot to the floor. Did you check all the spark plug wires for spark? I would take a look at the coil too.

FT,

Only checked the front 3 plug wires. No spark in any (obvious). About the coil - any way to verify it is bad short of going to buy another?

Meaning it's time to get a new one!

Just kidding here.

Sounds to me like either the main coil or pick-up coil burnt on ya!
