I have a 1993 mercury 115 that needs to be rebuilt. The rebuild will cost $2,000. A new Mercury 2-stroke 115 will cost $5,300 after trade-in. I am leaning towards the new motor because I have a walleye trip to Canada on July 17. My question: given my limited experience with motors and repair, will the rebuild be expected to run as good as the new one? Does anybody still buy Mercury 2 stroke motors? Thanks for any and all opinions.

To answer your question, if properly done the rebuild should run as good as new. However, what you have to consider is with a new motor you get an ENTIRE new motor rather than new rings, pistons, etc. Depending on the hours on your current motor, this means no wear on lower unit, etc. Also, you have to consider you will get a warranty with the new outfit (don't know if that is the case with the rebuild) and the increased resale that goes with the upgrade. The bottom line is you need to figure out what your budget will allow and what you will have confidence in.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

Bruce:
Hope you don't mind a curiosity question -- I'm running '96 115 Merc and am wondering what I can expect down the road.
--Did you buy yours new?
--Does it have lots of hours on it?
--Did it wear out or break down?
--It appears that you like its performance, because you are either rebuilding or replacing with the same motor -- am I right?
--Any other comments?
Thnx!
