LAST EDITED ON Apr-20-01 AT 05:25PM (CST)[p]Everybody always has time to say something bad about something, here is something good about something. I fish with St Croix rods, I just like them. Just a plug for them and there cust. service, I have sent a couple of rods in over the years for repairs and have always gotten them reparied for little or no charge, in a very prompt maner withiin 10 working days at the longest. The only one they did not was the one the kids stepped on and it was a older Premier, snaped the tip off, they offered to replace it for a minumum charge. Just my 2 cents worth, it pays to buy a good product I guess. Just one other co. that I have had good luck with is Garmin, repaired a 4 year old 2plus no charge.

All I use partner. I used to work at a large fishing store also. They had nothing but good things to say about their service.

What are you guys talking about?!?!?!

I have a 6'6" two piece St. Croix Premier rod

After using the rod for about a year, the clear finish began to suddenly flake off and now is mostly gone. I sent the rod in when the problem started, the rep. there told me that it was not a manufacturing defect, and was not covered under warrantee. He then had the guts to offer me a "deal" on a new rod. I would have to be nuts to order a new rod from a place that has this kind of policy. What do they think caused the finish to fall off if it wasn't some sort of material or manufacturing defect?

I have cheap berkley rods with more quality than this piece of crap. Oh yeah, the "deal" that he offered to me was actually higher priced that the same rod at MC Sports.

The finish is now almost completely gone on the rod and the threads are beginning to unravel because of it. I will use the rod for an emergency extra until it falls apart, then send it to the trash heap where it belongs.

Nothing but good things to say here about St. Croix.
Snapped a tip off in the tailgate once....replaced
Broke a rod on a hookset.....replaced

The finish wearing off could be caused by a number of factors...Leaving it out in the elements especially the sun will deteriorate any rods' finish, could be a manufactures defect as well. I have a couple of St Croixs that are about 10 years old, finish is wearing off on those, but the rods are still great, no loss of sensitivity.

I have never heard one bad thing about their customer service until now.

Will always be a St. Croix customer.

The rod that I mentioned above was never mistreated. Up until that time I hadn't owned any high quality rods, and always made sure to store it in the rod compartment out of the sun, and dried it off before storing it after rainy or wet conditions. I am sure it was not an "environmental" problem, anyway that would be no excuse for this kind of failure. If eagle claw can make a cheap fiberglass rod hold a finish in hte sun and rain for 20 years, then St. Croix should be able to also, don't you think?

Wow! The Fishnut no sound happy with STCroix. I would bet that would be an older model. I know some of there older graffites were prone to snaping and Gander was replacing them. But I have been replacing my out dated equipment with new STCroix stuff and have been astounded by the incriedable quality and performonce by STCroix rods. And beleive me I dont baby my fishing equipment. I think they have come a long way from when they were just another rod making company. Fishnut when was it you last talked to STCroix about your rod. If it was awhile ago I would try one more time. I would ask them to replace the rod because if you like it you may by others.

I used to have a St. Croix Premier whereby the tip ferrule used to develop stress cracks and defiberacate. They always replaced it, but I couldn't trust it so to the back of the closet it went.

Since then, I think they have come a long ways and are top shelf.
Am considering them for a next purchase.

Gee, why does everyone else always have good luck with Garmin and I dont? I have 2 Garmin Units and they both stink and never work. Sent them back to the factory and they still don't work.
Really, I get tired of having to deal with them. One is the old 75 that sold for beauceau bucks at the time and the other is a cheap old 12. At least the 12 works some of the time.

Next one will be some other brand.

Ouch! Fishnut, sorry to hear about this bad experience. I've used St. Croix rods for 15 years with only minor problems which were always cheerfully handled by the retailers, then the sales reps, and recently the factory. I would suggest calling the factory directly and tell them your problem and see what they will do for you. These folks usually "bend over backwards" to help. Email me if things go bad.

Fishnut,
Call the St. Croix factory directly. Don't talk to any reps or sales people. Talk to a customer service representative. They will take care of you. Send the rod in I hear they will fix the problem or give you a new rod. Had a fellow worker who bought one at a garage sale do that recently. He said they treated him very well.

OK, I guess I need to fill in some missing pieces of the story. When I said that I talked to a rep., I meant that I talked to a customer service representative at the factory. After carefully describing the problem, he requested that I send the rod in to the factory. I did so. A couple of weeks later...no response. I call the factory. He says, "Oh yeah, we looked at it and it is not a manufacturing defect, so it is not covered under warrantee." He then proceeeded to offer me the deal that I mentioned above. I told him that I would never buy another St. Croix rod after this experience, and I asked him to please send my rod back to me so I could use it until it completely fell apart.

I have since heard good things about their rods, but I intend to stick by my promise to that factory representative. However small the effect will be on their business, I WILL NOT ever purchase another rod from St. Croix.

I am not on any type of crusade against St. Croix. As a matter of fact, I believe that they make some quite good equipment. I just don't like to be mistreated and lied to by anyone, and I refuse to subject myself to it for a second time.

As the old saying goes, "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."

I broke my st. croix Avid when I got hung on a stump and broke about 6" off the tip when getting it loose. ( not a good feeling.) I called St. Croix, explained what happened and told them it was entirely my fault. They said to send it in. I did so and recieved a brand new one free of charge. Needless to say I will always use St. croix rods after that.

That is interesting Lundluver! I was out fishing coho's from the wall in the port this spring and it was extremely windy. I have a 9' Wild River Series St. Croix rod that I really like and can cast a mile with the thing. I thought I had the Suburban positioned such that the wind could not shut the back doors. I had three rods rigged and in switching off, I set the St. Croix against the back bumper of the Suburban and ... you know the rest of the story. That nauseating, sick snap sound as the wind blew the door of the Suburban shut. O.k.--- so it is my fault. I packed the rod up and sent it to St. Croix. I included an explanation and my credit card number. The butt half of the rod needed to be replaced. About 1 week later, I got a letter explaining it was my fault and they would charge me $36.00 to get a new butt section. So, I called and told them to please fix it and again gave them my credit card number. I have called them twice since then and still do not have my rod. They keep telling me it is being sent. I have had much better luck with Berkley. Raising two sons as fishmen, we have gone thru a few rods and Berkley and Zebco for that matter, always has replaced or repaired the rod with no hassles. Ya, the St. Croix products are very good but I think there factory service is mediocre at best. Thanks for reading.
