Not all monofilament line acts the same. Some are much more user friendly with spinning gear.
How heavy of mono did you spool and was it a low memory line?

It was Berkley XL 8lb I swear I made 3 casts and ended up taking off half the real I know I loaded the line right and didn't have the time to text the drag on anything. All I was doing was taking my daughter trout fishing on the local pond using a float nothing crazy. What a mess let me tell ya, While I was pulling line off she was catching some decent trout with my rod and 4lb fireline, She even got an 8lber rainbow and this is Iowa I'm talking about. She had a bast while the old man was swearing up a storm.

I use Trilene monofilaments almost exclusively. One little tip is XL is now trash, using it seems to be just asking for bird's nests. Now if you aren't completely given up on mono try Sensi-Thin. I have been using it for trout for the last couple of years and my biggest problem is breaking it off while miss handling a fish (meaning it was bigger then I thought).
