I'm sure this has been on the board many times before but can anyone tell me the exact temperature to keep my crawlers stored at in the fridge to keep them alive as long as possible. Thanks in advance.

Eyefish,

The optimum temperature for crawlers is 50 degrees F.. If you keep you refrigerator at this temperature, it should make for healthy crawlers. The best way to check the proper temperature is to buy yourself a cheap, simple thermometer. Place this four to five inches into the bedding, then check the temperature after a couple of hours. If it reads over fifty degrees F. this is not so good, lower the temperature of your refrigerator.

To maintain the moisture of your bedding, a damp cloth should also be used to cover the bedding. Crawlers also have to be feed on a regular basis. There are good commercial feeds on the market. This feed should be sprinkled on top of the bedding, daily if necessary. Do not mix up the feed with the bedding, since this may cause an acid to be formed, which can be deadly for earthworms. Also check daily for dead crawlers and remove immediatedly so they do not contaminate the rest.

This is a little more information than your requested, but to maintain lively, healthy crawlers, they have to be treated and cared for like a little baby. The only difference is that you don't have to change their diapers!

Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry.
