Midway through a fishing expedition on a small lake, my engine refused to start (after having started flawlessly that day & for the past 3 yrs). Upon taking the bell off of my outboard (Force 75 HP), and turning the key to start, I noticed that the starter would spin but not raise to engage with the flywheel. Here's the million dollar question....can this be fixed or do I need a new starter?
I noticed only a single power lead to the starter, so I'm assuming that the same wire source feeds DC to both the starter motor to spin it as well as to the solenoid to raise it. Since it still spins like a top, my guess is that the problem is internal to the solenoid and that I'll have to crack open my wallet to replace the starter. Any help in confirming/refuting my amatuer analysis would be most appreciated. Thanks.
