View Full Version : Question about Starter

Midway through a fishing expedition on a small lake, my engine refused to start (after having started flawlessly that day & for the past 3 yrs). Upon taking the bell off of my outboard (Force 75 HP), and turning the key to start, I noticed that the starter would spin but not raise to engage with the flywheel. Here's the million dollar question....can this be fixed or do I need a new starter?

I noticed only a single power lead to the starter, so I'm assuming that the same wire source feeds DC to both the starter motor to spin it as well as to the solenoid to raise it. Since it still spins like a top, my guess is that the problem is internal to the solenoid and that I'll have to crack open my wallet to replace the starter. Any help in confirming/refuting my amatuer analysis would be most appreciated. Thanks.

The small toothed gear needs to move up the shaft to engage the flywheel when the solenoid is activated. Yours is stuck. All you need to do to remedy your situation is tap it lightly with a hammer to free the gear and lubricate the are so it will not stick again. This should be part of your routine maintainance to keep this area lightly lubed.

Call off the dogs...guess it's okay to be an idiot (novice actually) if you learn from your gaffes.

News flash!....no solenoid, just Sir Isaac Newton lifting the starter gear relative to the starter motor shaft. Gear was locked to shaft, so....a little WD40 & a light rap to the gear & voila! Back in business.

Sorry Fin...your note didn't show on my screen when I typed last note. You were dead on target. Muchas gracias.
