Dace work very well on all game fish, depending on size. I live in Canada in the summer time and that is all we can get. They are easier to keep than fatheads, and are much hardier on the jig. The Red Belly Dace is native to most streams in northern Minnesota and southern Canada. The larger ones are very good pike and musky bait, but walleyes love them also. Don't be affraid to use larger ones for walleyes, "big bait, big fish".

Dace are my number one choice out here in Pa.
The bait shops sell shiners an fat heads but I greatly prefer ther dace. They are far more lively, stay on the hook better, and the walleyes here really seem to go for them. If you can trap them, go for it.
Good fishing!

Crash, A size eight hook with the barb pinched down works the best to keep from injuring them to much. The dace that we catch for bait work excellent but be sure to keep a cover on the pail you keep them in or they jump out. You can use a trap to catch them if allowed in your area but a plain hook and sinker with a worm is faster if you are after the five inch and bigger ones.
