View Full Version : beginning troller
i'd like to do a little more trolling this year. does anyone have any advice on 15-20 crankbaits to buy (makes, models, colors, etc.) i'll probably do most of my fishing on the Missouri river near chamberlain. thanks in advance.
I strongly recommend you get a copy of Mark Romanac's Precision Trolling. It will help you in many ways.
Lure wise, get what the locals are using, but cover various depths. My favorite lures are Reef Runners and they make 4 styles. Little Rippers, Rip Sticks, Deep Little Rippers and Reef Runners. 6', 11', 21', & 28' (max depth) respectivly.
Good luck. Have a blast.
Try pulling clown colored husky jerks behind a three way rig. Following the contour of the bottom can be productive. They cast good too. Take a look at the Rapala web site, lots of info there about sizes, colors, stlyes etc. They explain what each is for and when to use them.

A hot lure for the waters you're looking to fish is the #5 Walleydiver. Get a few different colors like chartruse, red, natural, and learn how to tune them, they are touchy. twist the eyelet (instead of bend) and throw the lure away. They dive 16-18' on 10lb test Fireline. I know quite a few locals like to run them with leadcore. Experiment with both and have a crankin' fun summer.
