I was wondering if anybody has had any experance with taking apart a starter for a Mariner.Mine was starting very sluggish and than wouldn't turn over at all.I went over the batt and that looked good and I checked the solenold and that checked out also.I called the dealer and they said a starter was $240.I took the starter out and took it apart to discover alot of black gook(I presume from the brushes) all over the end of the armature. The brushes still looked like they had 1/4 of mat left so I cleaned everything up and put it back together and it works.Repacing the brushes looks like a hard job as you have to reach all the way down the body to get at them. Is there a secret to changing them? Thanks in advance.

Simply take the starter to a starter/generator rebuilder. They have the materials, knowhow to properly take apart - install - and weld the brushes in place, check the armature, and commutator - all for much less money than the $240.

It is likely that if you bring in your old starter - you can get a rebuild for about $75-$100.

Take care
