I have a Minnkota 765 that I bought 15 years ago for my first boat. It is a little small for this boat. I have a 1750 Crestliner ProAm Dakota Sport. I couldn't afford to purchase new electrics with the new boat in 96, so now I'm looking to replace it after losing the battle of the wind in SD last week. My question is for the Electronic Guru's, to make this change simple I'm considering a Minnkota AT55 12volt. I run with 2 batteries for longer power. I've spoke with salesman that recommend a 24V system instead. I don't care for trying to figure out the existing wiring since there is a depth finder off the same batteries. Please give me technical facts: battery efficiency and life with the amp draw etc. Which system would last longer and would 10lbs of thrust make a large enough difference in the cost of converting?

I'm not certain about the technical facts but if you look in a pros boat your going to find a 24 or a 36-volt system. One could venture to say, with some degree of certainty; that they are running these for the increased thrust and running time.

I do know that electric motors are more efficient when run at less then full power but as to what %? My Pinpoint has yet to run out of juice, even on those windy days.

I don't know that I'd upgrade just for 10lbs of thrust increase, but I can tell you that 24-volt motors are much more efficient that 12-volt motors. In other words, you'll get much longer running time from a 24-volt motor than with the same two batteries wired together for 12-volt usage.

As for the graph on the bow, I'd move the power off the trolling motor battery and to the starting or accessory battery anyway.

Good luck.
