Hope this isn't an inappropriate question for this board. Anyone have an opinion on the best weight fly rod for bass fishing? A 7 or 8 weight, but which one? I've even known some guys who like a 9.

I personally like the eight weight the best in a three piece. I think for streamers and poppers it is perfect.

Are you catching smallmouth in a river or strictly largemouth in a lake? You have to ask yourself what you prefer in a rod to answer this question. I use an 8 wt. but it does double duty as a Steelhead rod too. It's a little light for the Steelies but I just run a little heavier leader to compensate for if they get me in a tangle. Good luck in your choice. I bought a cheaper rod first so I can figure out what I like and don't like , then I'll spend the cash for a much nicer rod.

Fishing in creeks and rivers. Right now I'm using my trout rod (5 wt) because it's all I have for fly fishing. I want a rod that will throw streamers and poppers, but also be able to throw some terrestrials and woolly buggers, helgramites, etc.
