I live in Michigan and am wondering if any one can tell me how I am supposed to hook up the safety chains. I know that there is a special way that you are supposed to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Don't know if there are specific rules in MI. However, the safty chains should always be crossed under the trailer tounge. If the trailer tounge were to pop off the hitch, the tounge would drop onto the crossed chains and not bury itself into the pavement.

jld,
Make sure that the safety chains are crossed, so that if for some reason the tongue pops off, the chains will catch it. Also make sure when you hook up your safety chains that they are not hanging too low. If too low, they will scraping the highway now and then and it doesn't take too long to wear wear the chains thin. Remember the chain in only as strong as its weakest link. Good luck.
Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry.

I don't know how long it's been allowed but I do know I have a friend who has been doing it for years now in Mich so it's been quite some time.
the chains have to be hooked to frame of the 5th wheel

Well I went down to the secretary of states office today and got the lowdown on this. For starters they make you get an "R" endorsement on your drivers license. Their way of getting some more money from you! As to the safety chains, their regulation states as follows: "Safety chains for the second trailer must be attached at the extreme outer edge of the fifth-wheel trailer with a locking mechanism." So my question is that if I take that literaly than I would not secure the chains to the frame because that is not near the extreme outer edge.
Any thoughts??
