I noticed that yamaha doesnt make a 90hp 4 stroke .does anyone out there know what kind of top end speed i could expect out of 1800 tiller with an 80? is it possible that yamaha will be making a 90 for 2001?

Any reason you're not considering a Merc 90 4-stroke? Very similar motor to the Yamaha 80/100.

As I understand it, it's almost exactly the same motor. I believe that it has the same powerhead and maybe lower unit. You could post a message for TMac, he sells both brands and could possibly tell you the exact differences.

My boss at work runs this rig an says he gets about 31-32 w/ half a tank of gas and two guys in the boat. I run a 1900 w/ a 100 hp and get up to 36 mph. I also love my Yamaha. This thing is quiet, fuel efficient, and idles down to a little less than 600 rpm.

Does Mercury make the 90 HP 4-stroke in a tiller version?

According to their website, the only offer that with a remote control box, but I can't imagine that it's not available. Maybe it's a dealer modification or something.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-00 AT 11:07AM (CST)[p]There was a picture of a Merc 90 4-stroke tiller on a Pro-V 1800 in the 2000 Lund catalog, so I assume it must be avaiable. I seem to recall seeing one on the floor of a dealership as well. It's worth checking out. A tiller boat is slow enough; I wouldn't want to go with a motor less than maximum rating.

One other thing -- a Ficht 90 will almost certainly have better hole shot and maybe even better top end than a Merc 90 4-stroke. The big question is, did OMC get Ficht sorted out, and can they convince enough people that they have to bring the resale value up to the level of Merc and Yamaha.

UPDATE: Sorry, there _isn't_ a pic of a Merc 90 4-stroke on a Pro-V 1800 in the 2000 Lund catalog. I can't remember where I saw that rig, but it might have been the In-Fisherman video of the 1998 PWT.

I am currently running an Alumacraft 190 Comperitor with a '97 90 HP Merc Tiller. I, too, am waiting for Yamaha to come out with a 90 HP four stroke, but I'm not holding my breath! To my knowledge, the 90 HP Merc four stroke is not currently available in a tiller version. I would consider a Honda, were it not for the weight. Perhaps I'm best off keeping the 2 stroke and buying the 200 other things I so desperately "need", like the LMS 160, 7520, new bow mount TM, etc!!

I'm planning on buying a large (18-19 ft) tiller boat come spring, and I thought about that alot too. I guess the way I look at it is, if I don't mind the 2 stroke, and I don't know what I'm missing, I'll just keep using it. I've been inhaling 2 stroke exhaust for so long now that it doesn't really bother me, but the 4 stroke would be nice, if I just had the extra cash laying around :)

Well let me tell you what you're missing! :-)

One of the main benefits of running a tiller is boat control while trolling, and nothing trolls like a 4-stroke. No smoke, and they're so quiet you may forget its running and grind the starter once or twice. Great fuel economy, which is an important consideration with gas prices going up. If I were in your situation, I think I'd opt for a smaller boat so I could get a 4-stroke.

I know that there's advantages to a 4 stroke, I've been thinking long and hard about it, but since I'm on somewhat of a budget, I have to get the most I can get for that budget. If buying a 4 stroke means that I have to get an tin boat instead of glass, or that I have to compromise on some of the other features that I want, I'll stay 2 stroke.

The tiller handle for the Merc 90 four stroke will be available very shortly. It will be in testing for about two more weeks. There is finally a part number for the four stroke handle. As far as the lower units for these two engines, Yamaha uses their own lower unit and Mercury uses their own lower unit.
The 80 Yamaha and 90 Mercury are the same motor, for some reason Yamaha chose to market their engine as a 80 H.P.

To this date, I have yet to get a tiller handle for the 9o Merc 4-stroke.
Has cost some sales to Merc...no doubt.
Anybody out there gotten a tiller handle yet on the Merc 90(Four stroke)?

for me the merc even if it was availible in tiller config. wouldnt be an option due to the fact that ihave no lund/merc dealer close enough.as far as motor goes its gotta be omc or yammy and im pretty sure i want a 4 stroke. one other option would be to go with 1775(currently running 1800 se)but dont like the idea of adjustingto smaller boat.wish lund wouldnt have dropped the 1900 tiller.
