View Full Version : 2000 Mecr 9.9 4-strokes
Tip for all you Merc 9.9 four stroke owners. The Merc oil filter is the same as a Fram PH6607. (This is the filter for Late 99's and 2000 models on. Previous models used a different filter.)
My dealer charged me over $6.00 for the same filter I picked up at Fleet Farm for a $1.99!!

There's a catch though - the inexpensive farm-n-fleet filter doesn't have a check valve in it to prevent oil drain down. The Merc filters will not drain completely, allowing for quicker oil flow and pressure to the "upper" parts of the powerhead. If you have an oil related engine failure, don't expect warranty coverage if its got an orange filter on it.

Just to clarify... These are FRAM Filters not fleet farm fileters. They are the EXACT same fidters that Merc is selling in thier white boxes. Carefully peel away the Merc lable and you will see that are manufactured by FRAM.

You do make a good point... If you are still under warranty, you probably should use the dealer stuff.

Saved > 5 bucks. Big friggin' deal.
Manufactured by Fram yes, I know that - The same, oh no they're not. When I was at Merc Re-Certification this year, they had 2 oil filter "cut-aways" showing the difference. Its your wallet - Save $5 on a filter not designed for the application or $1200 for a new powerhead. Personally, I would by the Merc "labeled" filter.

Ok, Ok, Ok… When your right, your right! I did a little more research and found that FRAM has the filter with the check valve. PH2876. However, I couldn’t find it anywhere. (Probably would not be cheap.) Thanks for keeping me on my toes.
As long as we are talking oil. What is the difference between the Merc 10W30 and a good quality automotive 10W30? And how many hours between oil changes is the best?
Thanks,
J.
I just hate to see anybody make an honest mistake which eventually hurts the wallet big time! None of our "toys" are cheap. Regarding the Merc oil, it is good stuff, but there are other oils out there the meet the standard. Check thru your owners manual for the oil recommendation - SAE standard SF/SG/SH or what ever its up to these days (SI/SJ??? I keep loosing track). Any QUALITY, NAME BRAND, that meets those standards will work for your 4-stroke. I've got a Yammie 9.9 4-Stroke (small block, same as the earlier Merc 9.9's) and I use Mobil 1 in it. I'm probably wasting $3/quart, but I've been known to put tons of hours on it. It still starts on 1 or 2 pulls after 8 years.
