Is anybody running Amsoil synthetic? And what do you think of it?I have a Merc. 175 EFI and was thinking of switching to Amsoil synthetic 2cycle outboard motor oil, it is about five bucks less per gallon than the merc tcw-3 and they(the Amsoil dealer) say it is better. Thanks for the advice! Steve

I switched from Merc TCW3 which I was buying @ $10 a gallon and went to Amsoil Synthetic @$17 a gallon this season. I don't see any improvment in performance or any less smoke fumes which is the main reason I switched. I would buy whichever is cheaper.
Many of my friends as well as myself have switched to Amsoil several years ago -- all with very postive results.
I noticed less fumes, less smell -- a smoother running engine, much better idle, and no spark plug fouling.
I did not notice any difference in starting, top end or mid range.
Several of the folks had a problem with fouled plugs when they first switched to Amsoil. The dealer indicated that this could be the case due to the superior "cleaning" qualities of Amsoil.
After letting the "gunk" get cleaned out of the engine, my friends, as well as myself have never had a problem with a fouled plug.
I like this well enough that I won't be going back to any other type oil.
I have also been running Amsoil in all of my automobiles for the last several years. No viscosity break down in very hot running, and absolutely no starting problems in the sub zero MN winters. I also won't be going back to any conventional oil in my Automobiles as well.
Because of the extended time between oil changes, I don't think that there is a price differene between the oils. I have my oil periodically tested -- and change it only when required. I change my oil filter once between changes. No problems with any of my vehicles.
Try it, I suspect that you will be well pleased with the performance.
Take care

I’ve owned a Mercury for 12 years and a Johnson for 3 years and switched to Amsoil about 3 years ago. The Amsoil is definitely worth the extra money I paid for it. Both the 60 hp and the 6 hp start easier and after the engines are warmed up, they run much smoother and quieter. Best of all, the smoke issue is significantly reduced. I’ve also tried some other brands also, but I still feel the Amsoil is superior in every way. Hope this helps you out.

Where do you find the stuff? I am located in Southern MN.
I'm using it in a 225 Optimax. I've had no problems. You can't use it during the breakin period because it won't let the rings seat. We ran the oil resevoir down, added 1 Gal of Merc oil to run at higher RPM after break-in, then simply added the Amsoil. Good luck

I don't really think you will see much difference going to to synthetic oil. Your looking at saving $3 to $5, how often per year, with an investment in a motor worth thousands. If your present oil has been doing fine and as you know, thousands of other use this same oil, stick with it.
Also, if I am selling a certain brand of oil, I would probably tell you that it's a better oil. No good saleman wouldn't.
