The 150 Yamaha is probably one of the best motors you can buy. It will give you fewer problems than any other motor on the market. Check with dealers that carry both Yamaha and Merc and the service reps will tell you they get WAY more Mercs in than Yamahas. I'm sure there are a lot of people on this board who are happy with their Merc's, but I know there are a few Yamaha dealers too who can confirm my unprofessional opinion.
Ask your dealer's service rep.

I'm about to make the same decision & have heard less negative things with the Yamaha also. Thanks for the advise, and if you have any good comparisons between the Alumacraft TP185 & Lund 1800 Pro-V I would appreciate those also.

I'd have to vote for the Merc Opti. SmartCraft gauges, and parts may be easier to obtain. HPDI seems to be about as good as Orbital DFI, although it hasn't been around as long.
I'd also go with the Lund you mention further down the thread. Better resale value and the IPS hull. You can't go wrong either way, though -- you're chosing between two of the best boats and motors on the market. I dealer with a good reputation for service would be enough to sway me.

I researched both motors along with evinrude and johnson for about six months before I made up my mind. IN MY OPINION, and from my research I found the Yamaha HPDI to be the superior engine. Comparing economy, power and (most important to me) warranty claims there can be no question. Whatever you do, do your homework first and make your decision based strictly on that. One thing that I might mention, I bought my Yamaha about 3 weeks ago and at that time there was a 120 day wait to get it, just something to keep in mind.
Good Luck!

You couldn't go wrong with either but I'd say yamaha for a couple reasons. They seem to be more reliable and better resale value and saleability. Although mercury would be an awful close second, and I run a merc. but wish I had a yamaha.

On this board, I think it's a well-known fact that Merc and Yamaha have "some" sort of cooperative agreement. But a Merc is NOT a Yamaha with different stickers. I think Merc use a powerhead built by Yamaha, but that's all.
There are others who can provide a more definitive response. Good luck.

I have a 99 Yamaha 150 EFI. I have had zero problems with the engine for the 2 seasons I've had it. Use rate is 35 to 45 days per season fishing local lakes 20% and big Canadian lakes the rest of the time. Lots of starts, throttle ups and long runs. I think that if you decide to go with the Yamaha, I would go with the HPDI because the EFI will be a dinosaur in a few short years. Fuel consumption is about 30 to 40% better.
