I cought a walleye the other day .....I noticed a redness at the end of it's anal fin and thought nothing of it. When I cleaned the fish I discovered disease looking red splotches and spotts on the inside of the airbag. The liver etc looked ok. The meat seemed ok accept for a couple blood spots in the meat I think was only discovered from paranoia. The airbag spots have me worried though. It was widespread inside the airsack. Dose anyone know what this is? Can I eat the fish?
Thanks

Fisherman,

During the cold water period, viruses often manifest themselves amongest fish. Probably the most common is what is called "cold water bumps". As the names suggests, bloody bumps can be found on the external part of the fish. This is spread from fish to fish by contact, especially during the spawning period when many fish come into close contact with one another. This does not, however, usually taint the meat, but still caution should be taken. The best advice is when in doubt release the fish. As the water warms, this viral infection will wane and mostly disappear.

Whether or not this is what you encountered with the fish you caught, is hard to determine without seeing the fish. More than likely, however, you probably caught a fish that had some sort of viral or bacterial infection.

Remember to keep your eyes open and your feet dry.

Thanks for the answers. The red spots were all over the 'inside' of the airsack of the fish. There was little to notice on the outside . I guese I'll just cook th eheck out of the fish in the deepfryer.
thanks.
