I realize that this is a walleye site but I am very interested in a deep sea fishing trip to Mexico. Could someone who has had success down south give me some tips about where I should start looking to go.
Thank you.

Costa Rica or Nicuragua might be better.

Davie Jones in La Paz (Baja) is the best! Check out http://www.fishermensfleet.com/welcome.html

Only time I've ever fished and hoped I didn't get a bite (just too tired).

Caught tuna, dorado, roosterfish, sailfish, and had a big blue marlin try to eat a 40lb. tuna I was reeling in.

La Paz is a smaller town and is nothing like Cabo. Nice place to relax and fish. You go out in 20 foot fiberglass boats with 75hp. Evinrudes and 2 to a boat. Alot better than some big ##### boat. Try to Esidrio as the guide. He is the best.

Do you have a destination in mind, or are you going for the fishing?

For billfish, it's hard to beat the Cabo and La Paz area. I've also had good luck out of Mazatlan in the spring.

I have been to the Baja a number of times. Just returned from two weeks. Email if you want some specific answers.

There are several different ports in Mexico for deep sea fishing including Matzalan and Cabo. I am a booking agent and we send a lot of people to both destinations.

There are also many other destinations for deep sea fishing including Florida, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Australia and San Diego. We send a lot of fishermen to these ports also. My company also sponsors a marlin tournament in Hawaii.

Pricewise, Cabo is the best. Numbers of fish, Cabo is great and Costa Rica is great. Big Fish, Hawaii is probably the best along with Australia (Anybody that would sit on a plane that long has got to be a serious fisherman). Don't get me wrong, big fish are caught at all ports every year, but Hawaii is noted for the most granders.

Another thing to look at is can you package a couple trips together. You can package bass and billfishing in Matzalan, tarpon and billfishing in Costa Rica and freshwater and billfishing in Florida.

My choices:

1. Costa Rica. Tarpon and river fish for 5 days on the Gulf side and billfish for 2days on the Pacific Side. Great scenery and ecotours.
2. Cabo. The product for the price is great. May want to come in early from catching too many fish.
3. Matzalan. Lake El Salto for a couple days and a couple days off shore. Best bass fishing around and some great deep sea fishing. Can also do a blast and cast and do some hunting.
4. Hawaii. Went last year and won our tournament with a 505 Lb. Pacific Blue Marlin. Awesome. Didn't catch many fish. Only boated 3 fish in 2 days. One wahoo (ono), one white tip shark and the marlin. Prices are not that bad to go to Hawaii. Much cheaper than you would think. Great vacation spot for families if the guys want to take a couple days on the water.

If I can offer any more info, please feel free to ask.

I've fished the Bay of LA area about a 10 hr drive south of San Diego for Dorado and Sailfish. My son sets up trips through San Diego State. You can stay in the local motel or camp just outside of town. I liked the camping right on the beach. The boats ran about $125/day for two. I was there in August so we only fished the mornings until "noonish" and then got off the water. By mid-afternoon we got up from our nap and skin dived the waters right in front of our camp site.

There's a decent website for Baja...something like Friends of Baja or something like that. Just do a search for it and you'll find a ton of useful info

For sails, tuna, dorado and marlin, my favorite is still Zihuatanejo (nearest town to the Ixtapa resorts). Excellent inshore and offshore fishing, decent fishing fleet, reasonably priced clean hotels and you won't beat their charter prices anywhere. (Less than US$200 for a boat all to yourself.)

Burt, what time of year did you go?

I've been there in late January and in March. December through March are probably the peak sailfish months (although they are around pretty much all year). Feb-March are supposed to be some of the better months for marlin. Avoid April...the current pushes all the big fish way offshore. August is probably the best time inshore for roosterfish. Yellowfin tuna year round, but best Feb-March.

The nice thing about Zihuatanejo is the calm water and short distance to the fishing grounds.
