Anybody know of a good chat site for flyfisherpeople? How did people do in the Minnesota area this past weekend? Any good advice for what to use in the St. Cloud area. I don't need to know your spots, but maybe a good fly or bait? Thanks in advance!

I used to live in Hastings, did some fishing around Caledonia. Beautiful area, but locals won't tell you squat, you are on your own. Nymphs were always good to me: Hares ears, Zug Bugs, etc. I wasn't into streamers at the time, but I would think it would be very hard to beat a wooly bugger, drift it down, strip it back. I used to spend a lot of time just South of Redwing, some farmers there were quite courteous if you asked permission. I used a Hare's ear tied on a 1/64 oz microjig on 4lb ultralight spinning gear. 30 fish days were not uncommon, but most of them had a hard time breaking 6 inches. I did catch one 15 inch "monster". They were the ultimate in spooky, crawling on your hands and knees was mandatory, long casts were a plus. I have a sister in Monticello, have wondered if floating the Mississippi in a float tube would be a fun thing to try.

I suspect you won't find much for a web site or support group. I would start with the DWR, ask lots of questions. I'll bet you will find a fly fisherman within the DWR there who knows the populations and the natural forage to imitate. He's probably starved for company too.

Good Luck!

I think the website you're looking for is www.virtualflyshop.com That has regional message boards for various parts of the country. I'm sure somebody over there could answer your questions. -- mark
