When I am cranking my 96 Mariner 175 offshore,if it does not start with in 10 to 15 seconds the starter motor kicks out. After this happens it is very diffucult to start because when I turn the key the starter takes a dozen or so times to catch, crank and start. The dealer replaced the starter last season [99].Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

sounds like a timing proplem to me,i have worked on merc motors for a long time, i would have a mechanic do a lync and sync on that motor, they are hard starters in the first place if you dont pump up the ball on the fuel line and have them straight up and down when starting, push the key in and count to five then start turning motor over see what happens, starter is kicking out because it is firing, and the timing could be off, iwould start with a lync and sync and go from there,or if you could give me some more information i could help you more like compression and spark if it is in the range, seen this post along time ago, didnt have time to answer, you can email me at ml2trick@yahoo.com
