When mounting a GPS external antenna, is it ok to shorten the antenna wire, or will it affect the performance of the unit? Mine has about 30' feet of cable and I only need about 4-5'. The unit is a Garmin 162.

Presuming you can properly re-attach the coaxial connector, there is no problem with a shorter feedline (in fact, your reception might improve), but understand that this is a small coaxial cable, not just a hunk of wire. You can't just chop out a piece and solder the ends back together like a power cable or something.
