Fireing range info in Lake erie

Were do you get info on when you can fish inside the fireing range area on the lake . I am takeing a fishing vacation in the first part of May . Also are there any restrictions that I need to know about. Any info will be helpful .

The best thing to do is to contact Camp Perry Range Safety on channel 16. They will tell you to switch and answer on an alternate channel. Go to that channel and call again. They will tell you if the range is hot or cold. They will also have Range control boats running the perimiter of the impact area if there are firing exercises taking place. These boats will not allow you into the area if firing is taking place.

One other word of caution is waranted here as well.

There are many reefs within the impact area that are extreemley shallow this year with the low water. Crib Reef is almost but not quite a beach and you could do some serious damage to your boat and lower unit by hitting it. Please use extreme caution when entering the area. At least this year the bullets aren't the only thing you need to worry about.

The best way to find out what is going on at the Camp Perry range is to call them on channel 16 on your VHF radio. Call for "Camp Perry range safety. They will answer and direct you to a working channel, most likely channel 9. Ask "are you firing today?". They will tell you what is going on. They may say we are firing on range 1 today. Range 1 is the inner range, which is an arc about 3 miles from the safety tower at Camp Perry. Or they may say firing on range 1 and 2. Range 2 is the outter range and is a rectangle outlined by markers A, B, C, D, ect. All these range markers are show on good charts of the area, which you should have or get before going onto the lake.
