Hey gang,

I have a bit of a problem. My truck has brake lights only on the passenger side of the truck.

I replaced the bulbs, no go. Pulled plug on back of light recepticle, checked for power, no power.

I have power at the trailer harness and the other brake light. I pulled the plug where the rear wiring harness plugs into the harness that comes down the side.

I checked for power, the dark green wire has power when the brake pedal is applied. I cannot find where the dark green wire runs up to the bad brake light.

My question, does the dark green wire supply all the brake light power, or is one of the other wires also a brake wire coming down the side? Where does the brake power get split to power both lights?

Lastly, where might a guy find a wiring schematic for a 96 Chevy extended cab, 2wd?

Thanks.............R

Get a Chilton's manual. I have one and it's the best investment I have for problems that have popped up on my 97 C/K1500.
Scmematics are toward the back.

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the answer. I guess I already know that. I have had Chilton's manuals for most all of my vehicles. I also seemed to remember that several previous vehicle's had wiring diagram's in the manual from the factory. Not so with this one.

I figured what the heck, maybe someone here would have had an answer.

The stores open up at 9 am tomorrow, I bet you know what I am gonna go and buy........;-)

Thanks again.......R

See if there is power to the dark green wire with the signal light on. I think it supplies power to the right rear light for stop/turn. The left side should use a yellow wire. Other colors back there light green=backup lights, brown=tail lights, black should be ground(I don't remember seeing a black wire on my truck). You may just need to take apart the factory plug that is near the spare tire(the one you found power for the green wire at)check for power with brakes on for the yellow wire and use some electrical grease and plug it back in.
If you have one of those modular plug in trailer wire deals on it, you may want to connect the truck wires back together without it to see if something didn't burn out in it.

I've had the same and a similar problem on both my Chevy trucks. The seal around the rear lights let water in, which affects the circuit board. I've just replaced the whole housing and the problem has been solved. Cost approx $70.00.

A few years ago I had a problem like this with a Chev. truck. The interior light wasn't working and the electricity rerouted itself somehow. Check all fuses and make sure everything else is working. You get lucky and it might be something this simple. Good luck.
