All things being equal, which boat would have cost more new - the Dominator or the Competitor? If you are a Competitor owner, do you like your boat? Anything you don't like? I found a
'94 Competitor 170 w/ a 60hp Merc tiller in great condition. Thanks in advance for all replies.

the competitor was a slightly more expensive boat. The 170 with a 60 should make a great boat. Alumacraft makes a fine product.

Yes, the Competitor was the more expensive model. I believe the Dominator was a larger / wider version of the Lunker LTD. But don't hold me to that!

Had a '87 Competitor 16 CS (same as the newer 170) with 90 merc. We used it tons until '97 when we got a TP 175. The Competitor was a great boat and I still run into the guy we sold it to here on WC. He has told me it is still in great condition and he uses it a lot on Big Stone.

Competitor is slightly larger and "nicer". Both are nice though. I believe the newer one like you are looking at has a bigger fuel tank than ours did, which is really nice.

Good luck,

The competitor was a little more very good boat. It was
replaced by the T.P. line. With this boat your looking at
being in good shape, I think you would be very happy with
it.

Have fun with the new boat
and good fishing

I have a '94 Competitor 170 with a Mercury 90 horse tiller. It is a great fishing boat. It was more mony than the Dominator. In the past couple of years, I've been looking to get a newer boat, but haven't. I would like to have more speed. My boat will go 30-32GPS. But I just can't leave my boat. It fishes just perfect. From my drivers seat I have my fish finder in front of me, my built in baitwell is right next to me, I have a 2 tray built in tackle box, with room for 2-3 more trays, right behind me. My rod box is within arms length. And your kicker motor or trolling motor is right there as well. Sometimes it makes it hard to go up front to run the trolling motor.
Let me know what they want for that rig, thanks...

90hp tiller? Typo maybe? 60hp max on '94's per the literature.

The guy is asking $6K. As stated, the boat is very clean, on a 2000lb trailer w/ excellent, like new waterproof cover(looks like it was garaged - I will continue that tradition. Minnkota 824 Autopilot, Lowrance X-70 w/speed&temp on transom, X-85 on the bow. Power Pro Anchor Mate. Two bank onboard charger. Power pedestals back and front. Compression test on 60hp Merc was perfect.

I've been looking for a console boat, but this one seems to be in such good shape and reasonably priced. It's hard not to be tempted. Considerably less money than what I was thinking about spending on a console boat too(half the speed though :-( )

sounds fair enough, go for it.

I owned a '90 Competitor w/75 Merc.(side console). Great boat! Approx. 38-39 GPS. Easy to handle. Dry ride (for an aluminum boat). Good layout. I've been in a Dominator also. Although a nice boat, I think you'd be happier w/the Competitor. FYI, I sold my boat w/trolling motor, X85, flasher, and rod holders for $7400 about 1 1/2 yrs. ago. It sounds like the price you mentioned was good. The only reason I sold my boat was I wanted a larger boat (bought a Starcraft Pro Elite). Feel free to email with any specific questions.

P.S. I took your advice and bought that Bass Pro Net. You were right, great net for the money.

Howdy, Steve

I run a '97 190 Competitor with a '97 90 HP Merc Tiller. Absolutely love the boat for fishing, but it is a tiller, so I bought Guide Wear! Top speed on mine is around 34 mph at 5500 RPM with a 18"P

I paid 10K for mine in fall of '99, which included front and rear 24V 74# Minn Kota Maxuums new batteries, and a bunch of other stuff.

6K sounds like a decent price for what your looking at, but offer $5200 :)

The '97s and newer have the 2XB hull.

By the way, the for sale sign on mine was put on with duct tape as well. I peeled it off and took any remaining adhesive off with WD 40. If I look at it in just the right sun light, I can still see where the tape was, even after waxing, etc, etc. It just freakin' kills me when people do stupid sh!t like that.

I actually just got off the phone with Vern Myers down at Alumacraft. He is just a great person to deal with.

If you have any questions or whatever, feel free to email me.

The '94 Competitor does have a double plate bow.

Right on! We must have been on the same page because I went and bought a second one! (just in case I've got one in the net and my partner has another coming in..... it could happen...) If you fish by yourself sometimes, this net will really shine. It's light, fast and adjustable length. Let's hope we get to keep them wet! :-)

I work w/ Mid-American Energy & Alliant when I'm in Iowa. Are you near the big river or more central?

Funny you should mention the adhesive. If one thing keeps me from buying this boat, it will be the adhesive and old decals. Even after I clean all that crap off, I know it will still show up because the colors will not have faded evenly. I'm not kidding - this may keep me from buying this boat. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, it does have a double plate bow. The 2XB has twin plates which run the entire length of the boat.

As an aside, what are you doing running a 90 HP tiller on a 170? Isn't that boat rated for a 60 HP?

Sorry, I have made a mistake! My 6 fell upside-down and became a 9. I have a 60 horse Merc tiller.

I had 96 Dominator with a 75 Mer. It was lass $ than the Comp. but a great boat. Was real nice when fishing by your self. Easy to handle. Ran about 37mph. Would love to have it back.

Sounds like you already got a lot of good answers but just an FYI comparison of the 2 boats. The Competitor has a 79" beam ,
.090" gauge bottom thickness, Twin plated bow. The Dominator was a narrower 74" beam, slightly thinner bottom at .080" , also had a twin plated Bow. They have not made the Dominator for a couple of years now.I myself would sure like to find a late model one,and thought the used market would be flooded with them when the Magnums and Navigators came available. That hasn't happened.I guess people are holding on to them. I dont think anyone is actually making a boat that compares to the Dominator right now. By that I mean a slightly smaller lighter package thats built like a battleship and still has full tournament boat features. All the boats in that size range now are pretty flimsy,,dinky livewells,no onboard fuel tanks etc and are pretty much entry level. Too bad! Not all of us can manage or store a 80-90" beam ,1000lb ++ rig .

Craig,

We made the move from the 87 Comp w/90 to 97 TP 175.

I am sure you know this :) but you will love your new boat. We loved our Comp but the size of the TP is just beautiful, and the ride with the new hull solid as a rock, and then some.

Have fun!

You'll love it!

We went with 150 Merc efi. The optimax wasn't out yet in 97. Our efi has been flawless (after a dealer installation screw up was fixed).

The 150 pushes it really, really good... but you always wonder what a 175 would do... hehe...

We are getting most likely a yamie T8 for kicker this spring. We actually can troll down to .8 mph with the 150 and a drift sock, but the driver has to pay 100% attention to keeping it straight.

The 4 strokes are really nice. I still like the performance of the big guys though. And we usually have three fat guys in the boat plus gear, so more umph is nice. Even with 4 guys our boat shoots out of hole like a rocket. We have High Five prop and it gets 48-49 mph gps with a heavy load. Not supper fast, but thats with a lots of people and weight, and it handles great.

Try a bunch of props out when you get, cause it makes a big difference in handling. We got the one that works best for us, and not the fastest prop.

Good luck getting the boat!
