View Full Version : New Boat set up
I'm trying to figure out how to set up a new Crestliner and could use some informed opinions. I'll be the proud owner of a new Crestliner Fishhawk with a 4 stroke 115 yamaha. Anyone have any esperience with the Lowrance x-85 as far as electronics goes. I like the idea of its real-time display and have had good luck with Eagle products before, however I've never really fished with one . Would you go with something else for around the same money? Also, will 55pounds of thrust on a minnkota bowmount be enough for a deep and wide 17 foooter?
Thanks ahead for your input.

dave,
Nice boat!, I have the same except I have a Evinrude 115. I have a 48# bowmount trolling motor, moves it around nicely, I think you'll be happy with the bowmount your looking at.
Good luck with your new boat.

The X-85 is a great, simple to use finder. You'll really like it's back-lighting capability.
I've also got the F115 (on a similar size Lund). You are going to love that motor.
The 55# MK bow mount should do just fine (xcept in the strongest of winds or longest of days) Get the longest shaft available.
Congrats!

Dave-
The X-85 does not have a real time display, unless it is a feature Lowrance added this year. I believe the X-65 has some kind of "flasher" display, but I wouldn't consider it "real time".

I HAVE THE X 85 LOCATOR VERY GOOD UNIT WISH IT HAD A LARGER SCREEN LIKE THE NEW X15 LOCATORS
The X85 is a nice unit and Lowrance has a very good service dept if you have any problems. I like lowrance products and I own several but on thing about the X 85 and X65 is they don't read fish as well right on the bottem. I have a Si-Tex 106 and that is much more accurate in deep water. That is the only down side of the of the X85 that I can see. The Griz, a walleye fishing guide uses a 106 on Mille Lac and he swears by it but the only problem is the unit draws 5 amps. There are other electronics out there and maybe someone will respond to you about them.

I have a 17 boat with a 73lb. Maxxum on the front. Handles it well in the wind and will go all day. Only have to run it on 20-30% power. I'm glad I spent the extra money. Warning........do not have the motor on full power and pointed sideways when you turn it on.

Dave,
Congrats on your new purchase! I bought a 1700 Superhawk last year. Same hull as your 1750 Fishhawk, but in a fish-and-ski layout with full windshield. I got mine with the 115 Evinrude Ficht. Nothing but praise for both the boat and motor. May you be as happy with yours as I am with mine...
I put a Minnkota 65PD/AP bowmount on the boat. I never felt lacking in power, and the motor ran flawlessly. I expect that your 55 pounds will be very adequate in all but the most inclement conditions.
I have no on-the-water experience with the X85, but my choice was narrowed down to the X85 and the Garmin 240. I have always been a Lowrance/Eagle kinda guy. The Garmin was priced substantially less than the X85, and it looked like they were comparable in almost all areas (backliting being the one obvious exception). A friend of mine, who was a manager of our local outdoor store, was a self-confessed Lowrance fanatic who had been convinced to try the Garmin. He loved it, and I bought mine on his suggestion. Despite some negative comments about the 240 I've read in WC, my experience with it has been great. I have no problem seeing bottom-hugging fish, and I'm sure the X85 would perform equally as well.
Good luck in whatever you choose, and if I can be of any help, just send me an e-mail. Bye for now.

I had a X85 and a 150khz flasher running side by side (both transom mount), while I liked the X85 it would lag behind the flasher for showing arches by about 5 seconds when slowly jigging. Swapped over to Pinpoint, never going back. You might want to look into pinpoints 7420. If you ever want to expand, you won't have to sell your electrics, and start over (there was alot of fast talking at my home with this very subject). Had a 1750, nice boat.

Got a Lund Mr Pike simaler boat design, you will love the engine. I have the X-85 no complaints but would go Pinpoint if I where to do it again, like there flashchart and if you ever upgrade tolling motors you can interface withit, check out the new 7420 simaler price, if you live in the Twin Cities talk to Matt Thompsan at Thorne Bros. If you go with a s.s. prop try Turbo 19'. Also have 48# Autopilot seems to be ok dont scrimp on the shaft length.
Good luck moreyes

Doesn't sound right. Kick up the chart speed! I've got a Zercom on the bow right next to my X-85 and can't look back and forth fast enough to see anything like you described. Just my experince with it.......
u need to adjust your chart speed
