I often fish a shallow water impoundment in central wisconsin of about 5000 acres. I usually troll with boards and small cranks but never start till the end of May. My question, is there a magic water temperature when this method will start to produce. I was out on thursday and the water temp. was 61. The lake is loaded with walleyes but there is virtually no structure to hold fish so trolling is the only way I have ever been able to catch any. (other than the spring run)
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I have the same question: when is the best time/temp range to fish worms on spinner rigs, leeches on spinner rigs, troll cranks, troll spoons, etc.
Thanks.

Might not be the answer you are looking for but any temp is good for trolling with or without boards. I troll the Mississippi river with board right after ice out with great success just use floating raps instead of faster wobbling crankbaits which work better in the summer or warm water temps.

When the water is >32F, I am trolling. We caught fish last fall at Huron trolling nearly 2MPH on a morning that we broke 1/4" of ice to get out.
Don't be concerned about any magic temp for trolling. We've trolled the Willow Flowage in Oneida Co Wisconsin in mid November with the water temp 32 to 33 and hammered the walleyes. Regarding actions of crankbaits I know that people say to run a more subtile action in colder water, however, on the Willow in cold water I've always had good luck with Shad Raps and Wally Divers. They're not the same agressive action as a Hot-N-Tot, but then again, they're not the slow roll action of a stick bait. Give cold water trolling a shot and don't listen too hard to the nay sayers.

61 is a great tolling temp. I would definatly try trolling, with the conditoins you described.

Don't confuse lure selection with conditions that call for a presentation. There are only five fishing lures spinners, cranks, jigs, plastics and spoons. All of these have thousands of presentations to match the conditions and can be fished with any type of bait. Tempature or prey are of part of the conditions that call for a given presentation with any of these five lures. Hope this clears the water for more fish in the boat.

I like to troll when ever I can get the boat in the water, regardless of water temp. Just vary your speed and lure selection until you find the magic number.
