I've got two rods and reels that I picked up specifically to set them up to pull leadcore. I decided that's one more thing I'm going to try to figure out this year. The rods are 7 1/2 foot med heavy rods with a fairly slow action, the reels are high capacity baitcasters with nice drags. Where do I go from here? I picked up 100 yards of 18 lb leadcore, and some braided nylon line for backing. Here are my questions:

How many colors of leadcore should I spool over the backing?

How much leader material after the leadcore? (I'm planning on using 10 lb Fireline)

Anything else you can think of?

We use lead core on Lake Erie. We have two rods rigged with backing, then 1 color of lead core and @ 10 ft. of mono or fluorocarbon leader material. We have two other rods rigged with backing, then 2 colors of lead core and @ 10 ft. of mono or fluorocarbon leader material. We run our lead core out and then an additional 100 ft. of backing. The thing to remember is that each color will give you @ 10 ft. of depth with the 100 ft. of backing. The number of colors depends upon how deep you want to fish. The trollers bible, Precision Trolling, covers the use of lead core. The book is well worth the investment.
