View Full Version : Palomar knot question...

I have been tying the inproved clinch knot for many years, but recently decided to switch to the Palomar for it's higher knot strength. Palomar is generally easy to tie, except on small jigs with small eyes I am having trouble getting the line to go through double. I'm having to put it through single one way and then back through the opposite way. Is this a fact of life, or is there any trick to getting the line trough double?

I have used the palamor know for years, and have always fed the line through and then back through the eyelet - no matter what size the eye.

No big deal.

Works great on all size eyes. This is particularly applicable if it is cold and windy.

Take care

There is a tool for passing line through very small eyes sold at any decent fly shop. Used one yesterday to tie on a size 22 midge immatation.

That's how I do it too. Easier than trying to double the line over and fit it through. makes no difference in the strength of the knot.

Take a jig and some mono to a place that sells sewing supplies. Show it to the clerk and ask her advice. She'll show you some needle threaders that should do the trick. They work great and are also good for ice fishing when your fingers are cold. They are cheap. Buy a few of them. Your buddies will use it and forget to give it back. Thanks for your post. It reminded me... I need some myself.

FRED,
As we get older and the eyes get weaker the only two options for tying the palomar knot are the ones already explained in the other posts.
HT tackle makes a jig threading tool made for ice jigs that works great but it might be easier to find the same at the sewing shops at this time of the year.
I'll be 44 next week and I need all the help I can get for tying on the small stuff lately !
Fact of life.....You bet !

I do use mustads line clips for speedy changing of jigs most of the time amd this means tying less knots when searching for the right color/weight jig.
The Mustad clips are much better than the Al's kwik klips that come 3 to the pack. Mustads are bronze and ave a bigger loop allowing the jig more movement. The chrome plating process takes the tempering out of the Al's brand and they break after a couple jig changes.
They definitely make it easier on the eyes but you still have to use the tool or the single threading technique to tie the clip.. Ughhh !

If your wife has a sewing kit it may have one of those tools that you can push through the eye of the needle and insert the thread through, or buy one from a sewing shop. It may not be near as high price as something from a fly shop. They think if you fly fish you have the money! Good Luck

Tony:
Regarding the Mustad line clips, are you referring to a snap swivel or is this something different? Does Cabelas sell them?
Thanks for the info.
