View Full Version : Ranger 620, which prop, and kicker
Any suggestions on which prop to run on a Ranger 620 with a 6inch jack plate. The outboards will be 225 opti on one and 225 V-Max on the other boat. Secondly is a 9.9 kicker a good choice for this boat or is a 15hp kicker a better choice? Thanks for any help.
With jack plates the 3 bladed Tempest Plus (23 or 25 degree) likely 25. There are a multutude of these boats operated by pros, and factory reps should have a good handle on it.
For kickers the only 9.9s with electric start were big foots in 2000 (only one available) These weigh more than the 15s so some guys went 15s for the weight savings. The 9.9 will probably give you around 5.5mph in an emergency, the 15 maybe 6.5. euther one (in 4 strokes) idle down just fine. Hope this helps. Good luck.

On the 225 Yam on that boat, we use a 23 P. Pro-Series Yamaha prop. We do have a bit of elevation...if you are in midwest...you may need a 25 P.
On the kicker...go witha high thrust and then if you are talking Yamaha, the T-9.9 or the T-8 are both plenty. They are geared lower and spin a huge diameter and huge bladed prop.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-03-01 AT 10:56AM (CST)[p]I would think that on Yamaha a 23 pitch Tempest or 23 pitch Yamaha Pro Series would be best. I have a Yamaha on my Triton with the 25 Pro Series and it is a little too much prop and the Triton is lighter than the Ranger, although I do not have a jackplate so maybe the 25" would work, but I think I would start with the 23". With the Merc. you may want to go with a high five or Trophy due to the difference in gearing.

I ran a 620 last year with a 6" Panther jackplate on a 225 Opti. 21 Tempest plus was the prop of choice. You do have to plug the top 3 water intake holes on each side with 1/16 npt pipe plugs or you'll be sucking air.
I think I still have pictures if you need to know what I'm talking about.

Definetly the 21 Tempest plus. Any more than that with a full load you lose performance!
You need to keep in mind you should prop for all conditions, roughwater, calm water, and the most common load you will have in the boat.
Best of luck on that!

My 620 this year has a 225 Optimax with a 21 tempest, and on the kicker a merc 9.9 fourstroke mounted on a panther kicker lift,I don't see any reason for a 15hp but your not going to lose anything by going with it either.Good luck,Matt

I forgot to say that I am also using the panther 6" jackplate so I don't know if that makes a difference on the prop or not.Matt
