Mercury is not able to construct a working fourstroke, so they use Yamaha motors, fiddle with the gearcase, glue on a few stickers and call the creation "Mercury".

I believe that one makes the heads and the other makes the blocks, not sure which one does which

Explain to me what relevance this has to anything including that Mercury sux. Grow up and if you dont like them don't buy them. I guess they hold the largest market share because they are no good!? Give me a break. Actually Mercury must be some pretty smart manufactures to go out and buy good quality parts like Yamaha.

Why don't you go climb back under the rock you came from. If you have something relevant to share, do it but please resist from your criticisms with nothing to back it up.

What planet did you drop in from? This isn't news and is definitely not a secret. Manufacturers have cross licensed technology and cross supplied parts and materials for decades. Grab a rod and go fish!

I think the same think happens in the automobile industry as well. If I'm not mistaken, didn't the Ford Explorer Sport SUV utilize a transmission manufactured by Mazda? And in reciprocation didn't Ford label a version of the Explorer Sport as the Mazda Navajo? I think internal deals like this are pretty common due to manufacturing and development costs. Not sure if you're trying to stir the pot, but personally I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Ford owns a big share of Mazda. But, look at GM putting in the Isuzu diesels and Allison transmission. Artic Cat uses Suzuki engines if I remember correctly. This type of stuff is commonplace. I would imagine someone is trying to ruffle some feathers.

Yes, the Merc 50 fourstroke IS ugly, the gearcase is weak, it's hard to start when hot(often, not always), the cam belt tensioner sometimes break, and many many heads are replaced now!

Actually, prior to 2001 Yamaha built the heads for the 50hp Yamaha/Mercury 4-stroke and sent the heads to Mercury to install on the powerhead that Mercury built for Yamaha.

So, if there are lots of head faliures (which I doubt) they are Yamaha's faliures.

Beginning in the 2001 model year Mercury began building a 4 cylinder 40, 50 & 60 4-stroke that they will not provide to Yamaha in any way shape or form.

Yamaha's 2001 50 4-stroke is built with Mercury's old powerhead tooling in Yamaha's plant.

Mercury still builds the powerheads for Yamaha's 25, 30 & 40 4-strokes.

the 4.0l v6 used in the ranger and explorer are mazda engines, mazda also makes an ugly-duckling version of the ranger. as a mater of fact, if you look at many other vehicles the similarities betwene brands-often US and foreign makers- are strikingly similar. many are even made on the same assembly lines. there are many benifits of taking the beter chasis design and combining it with the "compititions" better drivetrain excetera...the consumer wins in the end by having access to a superior product.

Geez, talk about mis placed hostility, driven by immense guilt!! You killede Ceasar how long ago? Get over it!!! Products and technology are shred all the time. Ort is it just that you are pi$$ed at seeing the back of the motor as it gets smaller and smaller as the rig in front of you, leaves you in it's wake?
