Two scenarios regarding marine radio range.

Large flat water with a quality radio and a $50.00 Shakespeare antenna. Same equipment and a winding river like the Missouri.

What could I expect for range in these situations.

Thanks

Line-of-site and I believe atmospheric conditions. I have had days where I talked 20 miles or more and days where 12 - 15 was the limit.

1.42 * sqare root(antenna height) = typical range.
Height is everything.
Antenna second.
Tranceiver last.

bob oh, You are right. Marine band is "Line-of-site". Also trees and other obstructions will hamper transmision. The higher the antennna the farther you can transmit. The radio waves that Marine band radios emitt travel in straight lines and do not follow the curve of the earth. Yes weather will have an effect on the distance the waves will travel. The waves can be "bounced" off of certon atmosphic conditions like clouds.
Hope this helps.
Keep your rod bent!!
