I have read your posts and you seem to well informed about Yamaha motors. I went looking to buy a mercury motor; either a 15 4stroke or a 25 2 stroke. Then the salesman showed me the Yamaha F15 which seems really nice. Heres the question; is the 15 a good reliable motor, any problem areas, and mostly do they suffer the same coldblooded condition as the 15 mercs? Also would it be wise to get the electric start or do they start easily?
Thanks Dave

I'm sure T-Mac will answer your question, but I'll add to his reply. I'm pretty certain they'll be similar.
No, the Yamahas are not cold blooded like the Mercs are. That's why the dealership I work for has over 150 Yamahas going to resorts that till now always ran Mercs. At least up till 2000, Merc also used a Briggs and Straton block for their small 4-stroke motors, whether that had anything to do with it, I don't know but, even the motors up to 50hp has had starting and running problems at low speeds. This has been for several years and I really don't understand why Merc hasn't done something to address the problem.
From personal experience, the Yamahas start easy and troll down to almost nothing with no problems. I've got a 9.9 on my Tuffy and can troll all day at .2mph. If you accedently lean against the start button, it's running. It happened. The 9.9 and 15 are identicle motors except for carboration.

I saw on here that you are from Townsend, Mt. My wife and I were going to move to Helena but we found out she had ms and moving didn't work out, BUT still planning to come out and fish Can. Ferry. When would be the best time to plan a trip?
Pay no attention to terry he spouts redicules statements. Briggs & Stratton has never built a block for Mercury of any kind. The fact of the matter is that Mercury buys the complete powerhead for their 9.9/15 from Yamaha so they run about the same. Mercury has bought the complete powerhead for these models from the 1st day they introduced them, even when they were the smaller displacement block. As far as rough running on the 4-stroke Mercury models up to 50 hp Mercury builds those powerheads for Yamaha so I'd think you'd experience similar performance with a Yamaha.

For rainbows, come in May or Mid - October to mid November. for best action.
For walleyes best bite is mid to late June or the month of July.

Actually sell them both. (Yama. and Merc.)
In general, all the smaller four strokes are a bit more cold blooded than 2 strokes. But, gosh, they run great after they warm up! Seems they get less cold blooded after they get some hours on them.
Also, the cold bloodedness, is often simply related to carburetor
adjustment and can be tuned out (or cleaned out).
Those are not the only powerheads from Yammi
It hurts to have a black machine with offshore stuff. Maybe I buy my Penn reels and St Croix rods in vane. But on the other side, it all works!!!
This post has no relevent content except it is time to go fishing!!!!
